The tuner tunes and in 4 track mode, I successfully recorded fretless bass, 5-string bass, and BugBass EUB direct to the recorder's inputs, including arco (which unfortunately sounds like me, playing arco, on the BugBass...the wife says I play nice pizz, though).

The 4 track mode even has a mixer to pan tracks and adjust their levels. I just plugged the recorder into my little mixer that goes into a pair of studio monitors. The HPF-Pre kept the low stuff under control with the BugBass.

One thing I got stuck on for awhile was remembering to set the input sensitivity switches to Low. At Medium, the level was good, but the note attack clipped. Using the lower setting plus increasing the gain a bit worked fine.

Wow! There's a lot of possibilities with this little rig, just in case you wanted to do multitrack on the cheap.

THis was the H2 or the H4?

Oops...I was referring to the H4.

BTW, although both H2 and H4 have a 4 track mode, only the H4 really functions as a 4 track recorder in the conventional sense, with its 1/4" and XLR inputs.

The H2 just has an 1/8" input and can't really be used for that purpose.

True. To clarify, as you likely know, the H2 is capable of recording four discrete channels, two from the front and two from the rear with its four built-in microphones. Those channels can be mixed as the user sees fit and there is even a mixdown interface within the device.

Thanks for clearing that up guys, this has been a really helpful thread, the H4 sounds really cool and more or less what I want, I would actually like to be able to record guitar and BG and be my own band, makes all the band management issues a lot easier dont it?

I use the iRiver iFP-895 mp3 recorder. It cost $130 at Best Buy a couple years ago, runs for many hours on a single AA battery, records GREAT with an external mic, and is about the size of a tube of lipstick. Also has USB port for easy computer upload/download. I don't think iRiver makes this model anymore, but the key feature to look for in any portable recorder seems to be adjustable recording level. The iRiver allows you to set a lower recording level for loud band situations, where most other dictation-type mp3 recorders would just crush the sound with automatic gain reduction.

Honestly the MD recorder is an albatross. It does not have digital download to a PC, which makes it rather inconvenient. I really should do the world a favor and eBay it out of existence. Or at least out of my existence.

How do you like the Henry bass?

I have one as well- I use it with a pair of electret mikes I installed in brass tubes with clips and some Mogami cable. But I also just ordered a Micromemo after seeing Amazon had it for $26.

Just and side observation. I was shopping for a new camcorder, and there are high end models with no tape, no hard disk, no dvd-r, - just SD card slot (HDSD). It just looks like all media is going to memory cards.

BTW - love the H2. Just carry it in the bag.

Sign up for email lists at Audiomidi and such stores and you'll get an email coupon once in a while. I got mine for 10% off. Not that that it's expensive now.

Well... so out of the blue for my birthday my dad got me the H2, I had mentioned a recorder, but no brand or model numbers, so it was an awesome surprise. After playing some with it today and yesterday, it is awesome, it took me about ten seconds to figure it out and the sound is so clear. Its the first recorder that Ive had where I play something, I record it and I play it back and it sounds the same as what I played. Its got tons of accessories and they are all useful. I really like it so far, now back to go play with it some more.
