Smokin' bass lines from the 80's

"Working with Fire and Steel" -- China Crisis 1983, Bassist -- Gazza Johnson. Definatley a Fretless.
I hate this thread!!
It's got me yearning to dig out all the old vinyl, which unfortunately lives about 3,500 miles away.
Damm, I must get it shipped over.
Great to see XTC mentioned I always felt they were very underrated and though I was never a Duran Duran fan I always thought JT was a good bass player.
Well done bringing up scritti politti who were great and had some nice bass lines. Used to enjoy Teardrop Explodes bass line to Reward and what abour Pigbag - great groovers.
Also does anyone remember Funkapolitan or how about Defunkt, who had an excleent female bassist (was her name Kim?).

I don't know if anyone remembers a british band called The Bolshoi. They had a hit in 86 called "Sunday Morning", which had a very happenning bassline. "Books on the Bonfire" was another good one.

I can't believe no one mentioned this already - what about Tina Wymouth (spelling?) and Once In A Lifetime (and most of the other Talking Heads tunes) - that's the same bass line but starting on F# instead of A...
Then of course there ol' Bernard Edwards and all the Chic stuff not forgetting Rappers Delight...
Respect to all the 80s pop stuff mentioned so far - I was really lucky to grow up in this era as there were loads of amazing bands writing really original stuff - Queen had a great period in the 80s with John Deacon really nailing some classics like 'Under Pressure' - I heard Wooten quote that during a solo once which is quite a compliment...

Good call - but give Wimbish his due - he burnt that mutha up on White Lines - especially on the fast funky horn break - I'll have to track down that 'Summer days' tune - BTW anyone here remember <b>Tackhead</b>? That band smoked live - I seriously love Wimbish - one of my big early influences. On the debut album of the aussi/kiwi band Crowded House (no.2 hit in the US charts "Don't Dream It's Over") it says "Joe Satriani - backing vocals". The same guy? I've always "only" heard about him as a guitar hero!?heath_the_great said:

The Fixx - oh yes, almost obsessed with them. Have "Shuttered Room and "Phantoms" on vinyl. Anyone know what kind of bass was used on "Red Skies, & Stand Or Fall?" Remember the tune "Are We Ourselves?" ... delicious bass line.
Yes - "Leave It" Mmmm, undeniably tasty bass line.
Tears For Fears - "Head Over Heels" the bassline, essentially is the song. Brilliant.
Steve Perry's solo album "Street Talk" .. is just filled with outstanding playing by the venerable Bob Glaub . Love that album. He is so much the man, it is worth owning this album just to see how well a bassist can serve the song with taste, tone and feel. The way he drives a song is magic. Highly recommended.

Aurra's "Are you Single"! Whoo! What a bassline! Also, Evelyn "Champagne" King's "Shakedown" and INXS' "What You Need".

What about the immaculate Martin McAloon in Prefab Sprout, just about everything on Swoon and Steve McQueen? Many highlights, but dig the upright on Cruel
Eyes Without A Face - Billy Idol. Massive bass.
Too many Jah Wobble lines to mention, both in PIL and solo.
Every other track on Talk Talk: The Colour of Spring that hasn't yet been mentioned.
UB40 Signing off, their first and best album and extremely replayable lines on everything.
