Smoking in Bars

Lowe-
Played in bars for years...no way around the second hand smoke. I've seen places with smoke eaters, extra ventilation, and exhaust fans and none of them really controlled the smoke. I always went outside every break to get some fresh air.
If this is the kind of venue the band plays, you'll want to factor this in to your decision. It's tough to enjoy playing when you can handly breathe.
BTW- The Great Progressive State of Illinois is now smoke free. Makes playing inside a lot better.

This is a hopeless argument. The fact is that both of you don't like smoking!

Is that a fact? Where did I mention that? I didn't. It may be easier for you to swallow this down if you think that people for smoking bans are militant smoke haters who want to get rid of smoking, but that's simply not the case. Many smokers are for indoor smoking bans as well.

And that's absolutely ok! You have every choice to go to a bar that doesn't allow it. If a bar has allowed smoking forever, and their customers are OK with that, you probably shouldn't go to that bar.

If a bar hasn't allowed blacks forever, and my black buddy and I want to get a beer, we should just avoid that place, right?

If girls in promiscuous clothing make me uncomfortable, but I really want some wings, I'm probably not going to go to Hooters, but another restaurant that serves them without the hot teens in short shorts.

Fine by me. When those short-shorts start cause public health concerns, let me know.

This argument isn't about smoking, if you ask me.

No one did, but you're right. It's about public health laws.

The fact of the matter is that smoking IS legal (and I'd like to see them try to make it not...). Smoking in bars is legal (here) as long as food isn't served. What gives you the right to push your agenda on business owners allowing a legal practice?

We've been over this. Legal in your home does not mean legal in a public space. Just like all other health codes are put on privately-owned public serving businesses.

I'd like to see you try to come to a bar here and tell the bar owner that you want him to tell someone to put out a cigarette. Someone will probably put out a cigarette on you.

Now you're sounding like a grade-school kid. "Try to say that to me in my neighborhood and we'll beat you up!" Come on, now- you were doing okay up to this point :p

Is it really that hard for you to go to a bar that doesn't allow smoking as opposed to one that does?

It's not my job to find a bar that follows public health codes and avoid the ones that don't.

I mean I'm not even that patriotic, but for ****'s sake, this is America! Smoking is not like serving rotten meat. That's just a stupid analogy.

How is it a stupid analogy? It's apples to apples. I know a lot of folks who like certain foods after they've gone bad. Heck, I like whole milk a bit after it's gone sour. If it is considered against a public health code, then that's all there is to it. You not liking it or not being able to intelligently debate it does not make it stupid.

The people in bars that allow smoking generally don't care about second hand smoke (and by generally, I mean all the time unless they're idiots). If all you're going to do is whine and complain about how you don't like the second hand smoke, and you refuse to find a different establishment then you're just an *******.

I'll let you guys have fun with your anti-smoking cool kids club, but I gotta go get some stuff done. I'll be back later... and I'm sure this will not have gotten anywhere.

This is just funny now. Every argument you've made has been intelligently refuted, and rather than deal with the examples you've been shown, you've just gone on to repeating yourself and name-calling. Come back later. Maybe you'll be ready to speak about the answers already given to every one of your bad examples.

Some of us are addressing the points offered quite directly while others are choosing to toss huge and rather absurd generalizations out there in an effort to keep air in a balloon that has way too many holes in it. Smoking is what it is - a habit/addiction that not only causes the smoker problems (fact) but also causes people around the smoker problems (fact). When an intelligent society becomes aware of these things, an intelligent society does something to mitigate or correct them.

Bryan and Tzer have addressed things very well here, IMO, but just to bring up a couple of additional things:
You have every choice to go to a bar that doesn't allow it.
So if I can only get gigs at bars with heavy smoke, or my favorite band plays there, I just have to breathe it in all night, eh?:eyebrow: (Fortunately, this isn't much of an issue in Illinois anymore.:smug:)
Do you know why smoking really isn't allowed in states where you can't smoke inside at bars? Because the lobbyists for banning it finally got more money than the proponents for allowing it. Does that make it right? This isn't a moral argument or a health argument at the state level, it's a "who's going to pay us more money" one.
Oh, that's a good one. Show me those companies with deep pockets that will somehow make money off of smoking bans, that are now sending droves of slick, tassel-loafered lobbyists to grease the palms of legislators like Big Tobacco did for decades.:rollno:

You guys are out of control... By the way, it is Monday and I still feel like garbage. I am going to get a diesel truck and hook a hose up to my exhaust pipe and suck directly on the hose next time I want to go to this bar. I will achieve the same result, see less fat/ugly people and save considerable money.

Smoking ban threads and global warming threads definitely have to take the titles of most "rapidly-posted-in-but-ultimately-futile-because-no-one-really-listens-and-people-just-talk-AT-each-other-with-broad-generalizations" threads.

I played a bar on Saturday that allowed smoking, the first I've seen since the ban (It's outside city limits so the ban does not apply). It was nice. I enjoyed being able to light up in between songs.

I don't really object to the ban though. I object to the way it came about but not to the ban itself. I'll smoke elsewhere, it's cool.

I'm done with this. I don't have to argue this because it's LEGAL in my state. Thank God Florida still respects the rights of private business owners allowing a legal activity (if you can do it outside it's fine inside, no sex on tables argument, huffing toxic chemicals) in their places of business.

Hey! Stop being so damn reasonable!

So this bar is like the ultimate white trash, meth-head bar. Don't get me wrong, there are some good folks that go there, but there is no reason that we should have played there. They generally get classic rock cover bands and country bands that get so drunk they can't stand by the end of the show. The band that I play with is like super experimental, indie/art rock. People looked at us like we were aliens, so I think that it is safe to assume that we will not be playing there ever again.

Boy, you're all over the place looking for excuses now. First you said what's legal in their home should be legal in their business. After that was proven to be terribly false (and dangerous), you're now going with whatever is legal outside should be legal in an enclosed space inside. Would you prefer I first point out how this is a terrible idea and how many holes their are in it, or would you prefer to think of them yourself and retract that silly idea?

Sorry, I don't have to defend something that's legal, regardless of any logic behind it.

Not only is that a ridiculously silly statement (bigotry and wife beating were legal as well), but you have spent this thread trying to say what is legal is wrong- the legalized smoking bans. I guess you've really run out of any valid arguements- you're down to "it should be legal just cuz I say so!" :D

Not because I said so, the Florida state government. And many other state governments. If we're going to argue about state to state legislation, let's argue firework sales/use.

For realsies, I'm done now. I don't say this often, but this thread has made me a little prouder/happier to live in Florida.

Edit: I forgot Florida banned Sodomy! Let's have a long pointless argument about that too!

I've lived most of my life in Florida, and have regarded the legislature there as a joke for quite a while (November 2000 was a stellar example :ninja:). For me, their laws on smoking are just further confirmation of that.
