well not to play, but that has happened before(musical) SO earlier in the year i was checking out shielding and electronics, and i shielded my own all stock MIM, and my friends asked me to do it to their jazzes and i happily obliged, they allowing me to borrow effects, heads, etc. so the other day, my buddy tells me he got a new ibanez gsr205(to try a five string out) and he says, i was impressed with your work last time, and now that i trust you, ill pay you to replace the pickups and electronics do a shielding job and a setup. im super stoked, as im in debt for the new upright i bought. ive worked on electronics previous to basses and 1 guitar, but now i have something to do. idk, i really need to pay the debt off, and was thinking of making a myspace like some of the kids that do recording do, what do you guys think? i will clearly state what i can and can not do, and will tell people when i am not comfortable. is it something i should try out, seeing as i dont have a job/wasnt hired anywhere? i really need the cash, as im 800 in the hole.

My guitarist has an old squier tele that he learnt to play on, it plays really well, its just the pickups that are a bit crap, i may be totally hot rodding his tele for him, which could be fun, i wont be making much moneterally out of it, but it'll be fun.

well i threw it together with a good description of what i can and cannot do, like i said i could do a setup(intonation strings action/truss) electronics(just about everything) and replacement parts. i was also upfront on what i couldnt do, and stated that i wouldnt do anything i wasnt cofortable doing on my own instrument. im working on getting up pictures of the work that ive done like shielding, electronics, bridge, a strat i worked on, and my workspace. that and getting a logo done in photo shop. is there anything else you guys thing might be a good idea to put up, i really wanna get it together before i start adding people. pm me if you wanna take a look.
im super excited, i got it all up and running and within 10 minutes of adding a ton of people, a guitarist from a local band is already inquiring about having some work done. as stated, super excited. sorry for all the posts.

After paying a highly-respected local tech to work on my bass and a buddy's Tele, both still had the same problems. So I spent a few bucks, bought some stuff (foil, shielded cable, wire, etc.) from Stew-Mac and shielded my bass myself. Not a whisper.
My buddy wants me to redo his (same) Tele next. I'll probably get around to that in a week or two. Hey, at least it'll pay for the cost of the parts I spent on my bass. And I've got plenty of copper tape and paint left for more.
A sideline in music-related business is almost as good as playing music, at least for me. Who knows, maybe you can turn a second-tier hobby into something respectable. And it'll probably pay more, at an hourly rate, than playing! I did that with running sound/lights. I started that as a "fun thing" and have made a ton more doing that than playing. Maybe you can too!

cool man thanks, it looks like it will pay off, the first night i have someone lined up for new ,pickups a set up, and some shielding. then i have another person who needs to redo their electronics, and then i have someone who im waiting to here from on what they want, electronics i think. myspace is a great thing, and this is only with 7 friends. pretty excited.

What are you thinking about charging, BTW? If I do the Tele, I've got no idea what to ask. I may find the receipts for the work I had done, and take 1/2 - 2/3 of his labor price.

thats what i was thinking, looking up prices and cutting em down. my friend that needs some barts and the shielding said 40 bucks to put the pickups and shielding in and check it make sure it doesnt need any adjustments or whatever, and i thought that was pretty fair, seing as im not a pro. but the first couple shielding jobs i did, it took me a while to cut everything to the right size and stuff, so ended up making a template for jazz basses. i remember it taking almost 2 hours from start to finsih, so i was thinking about 20 or 25 for the shielding, maybe 15 or 20 for a setup(i dont know what they run) and like 10 to do pickup swaps, or just straight part swaps without having to work out a tone circuit or what ever. this makes it cheap and affordable for the other local kids (im in highschool) and ill hopefully make friends and my name around the local scene. think the prices are fair?
