So I bought this neck....

okay I'm a big fan of the Squier Pro Tone V Precision. The 5s only came in red with humbuckers. Well I like that neck so much I bought one on eBay (the body is still in there by the way). I'm debating on what to do with it. I just knew I had to have this neck profile as it seems most basses are narrower than this. I'm thinking about jamming this Precision neck onto a Warmoth Jazz body, three Tone sunburst with gold hardware. Omega (badass copy) bridge. Your opinions on those too.

What other body options would you guys suggest? Does anybody know what width the heel is on a J bass five? American, mex or Squier?

Any advice is most appreciated!

The heel width of Squier and MIM V's are 2.83"....except for the Deluxe Active JV which is 3". Measure the heel of this neck to make sure what body you can attach it to.
Warmoth JV (non-deluxe) heel is reported to be 2.86" according to their website...

.14 on the Warmoth is pretty close. I'd be okay with having that cut out to make it work. They have some really nice bodies on there that I've been eyeballing. Thinking a sunburst is definitely the way I wanna go. I've always wanted a really nice sunburst bass. Never had one despite having owned 15 or more over the years. Probably stick with the gold hardware since the neck still has the tuners on it.

Though I have only played the Jag, never a Dimension. I do believe the Jag does have the 2.83" neck heel...but I could be wrong.

One other thing to be weary of, especially with regard to any Warmoth bodies, is number of frets the neck pocket is designed for. I think the Deluxe bodies are for 22 fret necks, Standard V bodies use 20 fret necks. And that neck has 20...

I've never looked at their P bodies, but the Deluxe Jazz V has a slightly wider heel, around 2.9" and a few thousandths...might work better...

It's definitely wider at the heel than most other Squiers. Earlier this year, I tried mounting a bound & blocked Vintage Modified '70s Jazz V neck onto a Deluxe Active Jazz V body. There was a considerable gap between heel and pocket.

Thinking a sunburst is definitely the way I wanna go. I've always wanted a really nice sunburst bass.

Currently, I'm seeing two sunburst Deluxe V's on Guitar Center's used database. You could do what I did regarding my aforementioned failed neck swap…get an inexpensive used item and if it doesn't work, reassemble and return it.

a tenth of an inch could work since this thing is right smack at 3. I found a body on the web that might do the trick. I'm not opposed to shaving the neck a tad to make it work.

I'm debating on maybe building a custom body from scratch. I love the Ibanez Talman basses, but I don't like those pencil thin necks on the 5s. Course most Ibanez basses are pencil thin like that and I've found that's not what I need or want. That and the fact that the color choices are black for a cheapie to mod, or natural for the upgrade. They don't come in all the cool options the 4s have. plus the neck pocket isn't anywhere big enough to consider butchery and scale can also be problematic. So in that light, I'm actually considering building this body design with the Squier neck pocket. Be one of a kind. I've never built a body from scratch...could be good, could be bad. That's new territory for me. There's not much investment beyond a blank and tools and I have most of them already.
