so I had an impulse...(squier mod)

being that I don't get many chances to work on (and mod) stuff these days, I often get irresistable urges that I can't control. This was one of them.

I had posted about modding my Squier Affinity Jazz V to accempt dual MM style pickups.

I couldn't control myself last night...

first I made a template out of plexiglass int he shape of one of the pickups:

and made sure it fit nicely:

then gut the bass

and measure out where I want the pickups, and tape the template on:

start routing:

it fits:

time for the neck pickup:

fits there, too!

paint the pickup cavities:

install pickups and reassemble:

in all it took me about 4-5 hours for the entire job. I think I started making the template at 7pm, finished around 11:30pm

How does it sound? good question. I don't know yet...didn't plug in. Maybe tonight after I get some other things out of the way. That will be a major exercise of self control...

So far, I have the stock 250K pots in there. not sure if I'll have to install 500k's. But what if I install coil tap switches, wouldn't the 500k's be to bright then? what do you do in that situation? I have the pickup coils wired in series, so they should give a big sound, kept the VVT controls. I don't think I'll do a series/parallel switching. Only series/split coil

yeah....makes me wonder what's taking my Dean so friggin long at the shop for "ONLY" a neck pickup routing. It's been there for a week already.
I gave them the Dean because it's a natural ash finish and if I screw it up you can really see it, not like this $99 squier where black paint masks my mistakes...this is pretty much my first real routing job; using a Dremel with router bit attachment.

Personally, I'd stick with the 250k pots. If it's too dark for your taste you can always swap them for 500k's, but with those pickups, 250k should sound great.

Oh, btw - next time you mark the control plate position on a bass, use a wax pencil instead of a sharpie - it will come right off when you are done positioning the pickup template.

Would you mind posting a pic of, or a link to, the actual router bit you used for this project? Was the Dremel hand-held or mounted in a press? THANKS!

That's a great job! You did a good job of measuring things carefully and masking well before cutting; it shows. You did it with a Dremel, huh? Did you free-hand that, or do you have the "router jig thing" for it?
It looks like it came from the factory that way. How's it sound? Huge change, I'd imagine.

I'm impressed. Looks sweet. Now you need to do a custom pickguard to fit. You might not want a pickguard, but I just hate how jazzes look with the screws/holes there with no guard.

I'm guessing you'd have to have it custom made because of the MM pickup in the neck location, but a 3-ply b-w-b pickguard would look awesome on that bass.
