So I had my first gospel gig today....

I guess I just don't understand the thought process of going into worship as an opportunity for paying gigs in a start up church. Wondering if you should ask for $150 over the $100 in your situation and after the very first service? Yikes. This isn't a bar gig, but I don't know the goal of the church so who am I to comment.

You should delete your comment just for using "yikes". Not very demure of you. I'm not getting into playing church for the money, I have a day job that treats me well. Getting paid is a plus that I didn't ask for, I was offered to get put on payroll by the pastor.

I'll expand on that. It was mentioned that the drummer thinks he and the other 3 should be getting $150., $600 for the band. Split between 5 audience members = $120. per seat and this is the bass players 1st show. I'm all for getting what you can in a business transaction but this seems off. Might even call it a leap of faith.

It was really all of our first show. Yes I am a noob, I actually thought long and hard about which forum to post in and came to this one from my own special logic

Bro what?! I'm from south jersey. If the market is $400 a month for 3 days of in person work, that is a crazy opportunity for a side hustle I have been missing out on. How did you get the gig? Do you just call up churches?

Some churches have a paid worship leader and everyone else is volunteers from the congregation. In larger churches that worship leader can be a full time member of church staff.

So they had a Gospel Night. Here's the fabulous Yolanda Adams covering Aretha's 'Spirit in the Dark', complete with a double time outro. They were having church up in there ! And I would LOVE to play stuff like this.

As an adult, I can count the times I've been in church on one hand. I have mad respect for true believers and my going to church would make me a hypocrite so I don't insult those called to worship.
That said, I played gospel with my dad through my entire bass experience. He was a walking talking encyclopedia of old gospel songs and shape note singing, and every time we got together to play there would be plenty of gospel mixed with old time hillbilly tunes.

As such, we usually arrange for our portions of the band's pay to be split up between the other two band members. The other two band members both work and their free time is more valuable, so this works out well for all of us.
