I have been gassing for one of these for a while. If I could get a white one with black hardware, I would die. I'll actually probably order an orange one when the time comes. Seems like a great deal for the $$

If you use Chromes, use a lighter gauge set. This bass really likes a low tension setup. You can straighten the neck enough for rounds... but some TI Jazz flats (regular scale) sound awesome on it.

Hi. After having seen you review, Ed, I bought my classic 4 and - of course - armed it with Thomastik Jazz Flats. Sounds good with the band as it does for its own. Thanks.
Recently I switched to Thomastik Jazz Flats Short Scale. The only noticable difference is the fatter E string. That solved my complaints with the regular long scale set whose E string was too floppy for my taste.

Those guys are legit. I called yesterday and no one was there and so I left a message asking about the headstock and left my number. Pete called me this morning to tell me that the ones they currently have in stock have white headstocks (only the white color classic4s) but from time to time they'll get a batch that has the black headstocks. So if you want a white headstock, call before hand and make sure that's what they have in stock.

Just got my newly upgraded C4 back. I somehow managed to convince myself that some upgrades would be worthwhile since before pulling the trigger on this I was ready to spend another $1000 to get a Lakland hollowbody.

So I took her in to have the frets glued in (a couple were visibly lifting a little out of their slots), to have it run through the Plek machine, and for a new bone nut.

They also found that the tail piece was not aligned properly and relocated it. I had noticed that the strings didn't seem to align with the fretboard and I thought it was a problem with how I was locating the floating bridge but I guess not. Seems obvious now.

So, what else do think I would need to do to this to get it up to a par with the lakland? I like the look of these a lot better so I think I'm willing to continue to consider upgrades to improve it's performance. (Or maybe it was just fine as is and now I'm just experiencing some kind of gear upgrade version of GAS ... GUS?)

Gas is the right spelling (Gear Acquisition Syndrome). But even if I do think that searching for the right finetuning of the axe is a must and a pleasure that makes your bass fitting like a glove (I am always tweaking and... "improving"), I personally did not touch my C4; just had the bridge shaved a bit below for a better action, since this bass is just perfect as it is, to me. Excellent tone, flexibility and overall sound in a comfortable beautiful classic bass shape.

One thing: if you think a lower tension strings change would be better, try first... a high tension set! You'll be amazed at the sustain and at the Rickenbacker tone you get from this puppy!!! "Sound authority" is the right expression!!!

I am interested in changing out the stock bridge and a Gretsch bridge just might be the ticket. Does anyone know what the string spacing on a Gretsch Broadkaster or Electrotone hollow body might be?

On the Classic 4 it measures 15mm.

La Bella "Beatles bass short scale" strings; the Classic 4 is a short scale bass. I have like... the feeling they would fit!!!
