So I quit my band. The final chapter.

I played almost exclusively in blues bands for many years. I finally got tired of it last year. I spent random evenings and weekend hours for a couple of years learning basics of walking jazz bass. I am now playing in a swing dance band (trumpet, sax, flute, guitar, piano, drums, percussion and me) where most of the players are older pros. I am holding my own but still learning and having a lot of fun doing it.

Some have already mentioned this - writing. It is fun, exciting and rewarding in a way that is unique. You get to compose , play as many parts as you choose and find others to help you complete you vision.

Here when people say “north Texas” they’re often referring to DFW area. Where are you moving to? There are a skajillion players in that area.

OK. North of North Texas, then. Sherman/Bonham area is where we'll probably end up. So I'd be a bit from from DFW.

It seems that you are a decent person that gets along productively with others; that's highly valued. Once you've moved, check out the open mics/jams and the music scene in general. Eventually there may be an open door you wish to walk through. Also, lessons a great when you have calm and stability in your life such that you can be diligent about practicing. I take lessons every once in a while and for short duration.

Thanks. Probably my key strengths are calmly dealing with things as they come and playing nice with others.

No man . Just invisible in the background and only noticed when you are not there . Obviouslt doesn't count if you are singing .

Learn to read music. It has helped me tremendously in the last 2 years.
Also started lessons with a veteran pro who is kicking my butt in a good way.

I was ready to ride off into the musical sunset after the demise of a band 7 years ago. Saw an ad on CL looking for a bassist for a Bollywood band. I've been with them 6+ years and have never had so much fun gigging.

That’s a bit of a haul to the cities but the northern burbs are teeming with players. Don’t be discouraged.

Nope. Especially with the passing of Dusty. everyone loves a good ZZ Tune.
Cover bands are interesting though in the ATX. If you one of the 5 or 6 higher level bar\ Wedding bands your dance card is filled. Mid level guys seem to have a harder time at least from my experience. Of course i was singing. Experience might be much different for bass player. As a side note - Tejas has become my favorite ZZ album it is so laid back and raw. I love to make a vodka soda and put that one on!
