So I tried Fender Elite jazz basses today...

I don't believe that for a minute, to be blunt...
Thats the nice part about opinions. They dont require your belief to exist.
Now is it possible that my local shops are run terribly, therefore the sample group is tainted? Absolutely.
Basses spending years on a hook, being tried out by hundreds of grimy hands and never receiving a setup can definitely cause issues. The bad fret jobs may have even been the result of fret sprout issues, who knows. Next time I'm in the city, I'll be sure to try some from a reputable shop to get a better idea.
Regardless, my observation and opinion remains that when it comes to Fender... the rate of consistency is no better on the American models than the Squiers.

wow, fwiw, very definitely not mine at all, and i've played several of all models of Fenders at many different shops, various personal trade/purchase deals, the NAMM show, and also the review pieces we get across their model lines. tho i do admit the squiers represent a very good value.

and like I said, this could very well be an issue of my two local shops being terrible. I will readily admit that the basses live on their walls for comically long periods of time. Regardless, I can absolutely say with a straight face that there isnt a single american fender theyve had that I would be willing to pay 50%of the asking price for. Maybe its just my hands.... who knows lol.

Whatever you say - I still don't believe you any more than I did before, lol...

Edited to add that "uneven fret job" and "fret sprout" aren't the same thing - I think you're just Fender bashing, like some here do...

You cared enough to reply with some BS spin, lol...
My personal experiences arent "some bs spin"... and I didnt care about your thoughts, I was being conversational because we're on a forum where people discuss things. Cared enough to reply? yea, im in the middle of working out in my home gym and have my laptop open for charting what I do so I leave TB open.
Dont worry though, we can fix this.
My apologies that the big bad internet hurt your feelings. The basses you prefer are the ones that we all think are the absolute bestest and nobody disagrees with you. We have all been floored by every one of them that we have seen and can only wish to own one. Is that better? :)

Yeah, I can tell how much you don't care, lol...

that's totally fair. and to take it a step further, i've very definitely been in shops that do an absolutely abysmal job of making sure their offerings are truly representative... across many brands. your experiences are sadly and definiteley not unique.

I realize I’m necroposting, but I know you will see this, @CyberSnyder. How did things finally turn out sanding the finish off the Elite neck? Were you happy with the result? How would you approach it differently if you were doing it over?

I think it turned out great, but then I had issues with the electronics and the bridge pickup. Ended up swapping out the pickups and preamp. It turned out pretty nice, but I was just done with it at that point and sold it. Probably should have kept it, oh well.

For the neck I just sanded with strips of a low grit sandpaper like you would shine shoes. Then took a razor blade over the fingerboard to mostly knock the gloss off. Hit it all up with gunstock oil / wax and it was super smooth.

Thanks. The Elite neck with a oil/wax finish sound like it would be ideal!
