This dude's job is literally to maximize the efficiency of their shipping process (reduce packing, qualify for cheaper rates) while charging the customer the same amount.

Product fulfillment is a very profitable business. There’s serious money to be made in stock management, packing, generating shipping labels, and reselling freight services.
I performed a similar financial consulting project for a pick, pack, and ship fulfillment company as part of a larger IT project I was doing for them. I was able to help them cut their costs by an initial 35% and an ongoing annual 20% plus just by analyzing their operations and suggesting they make less than a dozen (to me) fairly obvious changes in their operation.
They too went from being a profitable company to becoming a very profitable company.
