So my new Ampeg SVT-VR arrives...

IMG_6265.jpg

Insulation panels for packing foam...thanks for the tip. Wish I had thought of that a couple of months ago when I sold a bunch of gear.

Aaargh..... my reply disappeared... must have fat-fingered something...

Anyway, that packaging was way inadequate..... peanuts are no good for edge or corner drops, and that is evidently what happened there, that's what pops joints like that. The amp just squashes through the peanuts and the edge or corner hits the floor padded by only a couple layers of cardboard..... then teh case 'racks" out of square and the joints pop, the grilles get messed up, etc.

I had to supervise a complete revamp of packaging of all the Ampeg (and some other SLM products) . Got roped into it when the "official" packaging for one of my products failed the package testing process. So I have some experience to back my judgement.

If they actually would support the rear of the items in the racks, this would be an acceptable shipping container, but they don't.

BOB

Every recent (since 1994 or so) Ampeg rack mount amp has a 1/4-20 welded-on nut for rear support..... I don't think many of them get used..........

That would break my heart after spending that much money and waiting in excitement for it to arrive, I really hope you dont have any hassle from the shipper getting your money back. I guess the word FRAGILE means to drop it hard from at least 4 feet to do that kind of damage. I really do feel for you.

My UPS guy is awesome. Living in Western Wisconsin with a 3/4 mile, uphill driveway, winter deliveries are usually walked all or most of the way up. Once he lugged a 40 lb package all the way up the hill (it snowed in the morning and I hadn't gotten home to plow yet). We give him a $20 Target gift card every year at the holidays, whatever that's worth.

This, of course, doesn't mean that some other knucklehead in the chain can't be a box destroyer, but at least I know the last link is solid in my case.

That said, I think I would say say many, many swears and perhaps cry if this happened to me.

After fighting with UPS for a while, it seems they are going to take it and ship it back to David (the seller). They are going to refund him (not me), and he has to refund me. All of this is in a legal binding.

As ****** as it sounds, it seems like David will get the money for selling it, and I'll get the money back from buying it. He will get the amp back, but there will be no use for it. He can salvage the tubes as I don't want to rip him off. Since the amp is broken and it won't turn on, I can't see him trying to get it fixed. If he does, I wish him the best in selling it again. It will certainly be an expensive task.

The communication between him and I has been cordial and nothing short of helpful. He's been on the ball the entire time and filled the claim within half an hour of me opening the package and seeing the broken amp.

Once I get the refund and my credit card bill is all cleared up, I will be on the hunt for another one... this time I hope to find one fairly close, though. I may pay someone to drive me to it! If not, I will certainly make sure the seller can take pictures of the packaging stage.

The last few days has been nothing but stressful, but at least the outcome is that I will be getting my money back. I can't see David trying to rip me off, especially since we're on contract here... but if he does, I may be seeing some of you TBers in the South Carolina area.

this has happened twice to me. once from an amp i bought shipped to me UPS. it came obviously damaged from shipping. in that case the seller refunded me all my money & took care of the UPS claim on his side....totally cool & as it should be in my opinion. the second time was a power amp i sold to someone. i shipped it USPS & it arrived to him completely destroyed just like your amp. based on my positive experiance with my bad purchase i immediately refunded all of the buyers money & filed a claim with USPS. i followed all thier instructions for a claim & after a couple of months was sent a check for a full refund of the insurance amount i purchased.

i think you'll be fine. the dude sounds like he's stand-up, and despite all the ninnies who will no doubt rise up and be ready to hang this guy over something he has no control over, i think it'll work out fine.

btw, remember what i said about ups being fair? i think this thread more than proves it. they're initially a pita, but they do usually do the right thing.

Right now him and I are still fighting with UPS.

From the seller:
"Your local agent on duty, Amelia Duvall, apparently found no fault with the packaging and had no questions to ask me regarding the interior or exterior before issuing shipment and requested insurance coverage"

The seller sent a huge e-mail to the claims department and I received the carbon copy.

To go even further, your site states: "Damage to a package can be reported by a shipper, recipient, or by UPS. After a damage inspection is performed by UPS, the shipper of record is contacted with the results. Depending on the results, the shipper can file a claim for the repair or replacement cost of the package contents up to the declared value." However, there was never a formal site visit scheduled, even though someone in your Canadian branch inputted records (as confirmed by your Samantha Bryant) to indicate that there had been one (this leads me to believe they are attempting to cover-up known information regarding this situation).

I sent pictures to a woman who was dealing with it directly. She added it to the claim number. When the seller called in to check on the status, a person said they did not receive any pictures and that they were waiting for ME to send them in. I called the woman and she said, "Yes, I received the pictures. I added them to the file. If any employee of UPS looked up the claim number they would find it."

I've talked to the same woman over and over. She's been extremely helpful. The seller, on the other hand, is receiving contradictory information.

I am still receiving contradictory information from your organization regarding my claim here. Yesterday, I received an email stating that my claim has been denied due to insufficient packaging / double-boxing. However, I also received a phone message yesterday stating that Claim Documentation would be sent to me by Monday due to the admitted mishandling on the part of UPS. I'm really not sure what your department is not understanding about this situation.

It's funny, because one woman told the seller point black that he packaged the amp with more care than they would have. Clearly some of the people who are working there don't know how to package things...

Maybe some models Jerrold, but I've got 4PRO's and 1600's sitting here and the free nuts anywhere on the chassis is where the feet came off when rack mounting. Since these are the heaviest units, I'd like to see some extra support. I'm going to end up making brackets.

This just happened to me also.

UPS mis-handled my amp.

Seller packed it great. I seen driver damage amp. (was flipping it over)

This was a fliptop style amp. (B15R)

Claim was filed, UPS blamed shipper. (would not pay claim, or insurance)
I was told that UPS denies all claims at first. (Hoping you go away)
Then, they blame shipper.
I know of UPS claims where they blame shipper, ever if it is shipped
by UPS it self?

Good luck on getting your amp claim?

UPS people are STUPID. I ordered a shirt 2 weeks ago, something went wrong in the delivery and it took an extra week just to ship. So yesterday I checked the status and it said it had been delivered to the same place it was shipped from. Upon further investigation I realized something went wrong with my mailing address and it was sent all the way to the nearest UPS outpost (northern VA), and all the way back to CA. They could have just e-mailed me saying that they needed my address, but NOOOOOO.

if this is not stickied,it should be

Actually some of those ideas are available in the stickies! "Shipping Heavy amps". Box building is not hard, use spray adhesive and test on cardboard scraps to get the bond time right. Overlap the joints and think hard about preventing top crush as well. Weights were used during adhesive curing. The foam is easiest cut with an electric knife, but a sharp razor knife will do.
Thank you for noticing Jim!:)

I have a lot of stories from when I worked for FedEX as a pilot. Most are good happy stories, some I had to correct situations, anyway.

My very first story after hire. My airline tickets for training went somewhere they weren't supposed to go. (Miss Sort) I did get them the next day 8:00AM at my house, on the day of departure. Severe pucker factor.
