Demons run when a good man goes to war
Myself, If I am being paid, I don't REFUSE to play any song.
MS,meh, I don't HATE it, I am sick and tired of it.
Now I might HATE the individual that requests it,
but that is a different issue.
We're doing a wedding for a friend of the BL's daughter in 4 weeks. We were requested to do Your Everything by Keith Urban, Wonderful Tonight and Simple Man. Neither of these will probably survive after the event, but we will perform them with verve and gusto and smiles on our faces. I kinda like the Keith Urban song. It's my style and range vocally and I'll be playing acoustic guitar on it.
Had a rehearsal, guitarist didn't show, so it became mostly a band meeting. We're all on the same page with many of the things said here were repeated by my bandmates. No mention of a rage quit though. I mentioned that we're the Rat Rod of cover bands, and that drew big smiles. My first gig with them was a car show. We're hoping to do an additional car show or two next year too. That might be band logo potential right there.

I always felt that learning ' whatever ' tunes is a Good thing .. !? find the Good in it ... just cause it's on your Song List , doesn't mean it gets played all the time .. !? but , it might come in handy once in a great while ... ?!
I sang, "Marry me," by Train at a young lady's wedding. That thing is right on the edge of my range, so there was always a danger of me making some pretty unusual sounds. In fact, at the rehearsal, I sucked bad on it. Of course, at the actual ceremony, it was perfect. That seems to happen to me a lot. Put the pressure on, and the song works. I would've cringed if I messed that up, and those who had heard the rehearsal looked a little worried. (and rightly so) I doubt I will ever perform that one again.
I first heard "Wonderful Tonight" performed by the Lakewoods House Band at a resort in Northern Wisconsin around 1978 or so. I have always liked the song, even as maudlin and overly sentimental as it is. My band would not be allowed to do it, as we would not be carrying our hard rock dignity, and would be shamed by a certain blond, who I will not mention here.
I always did like those kinds of songs. Simple Man, I could go the rest of my life without. I just don't get that one at all. I can't relate to the subject matter AT ALL. For me, it should go:

And don't listen at all to what I say.

Well, we talked about Proud Mary since it's been requested a couple times. BL also has mentioned Willie & the Poor Boys. Before our run of gigs we were working on the Weight, with yours truly singing lead, but we need to work out the chorus. I also brought up doing C'est LeVie for the wedding. If we can pull it off it may stick around. The drummer liked my idea of doing Working Man's Blues by Merle Haggard.

Classic rock, maybe not. Oldies probably. But different labels mean different things to different folks.
We try not to play songs outside of our core 60's, but we do Keep Your Hands to Yourself which is 1986, and it seems to fit okay. To the OP, you definitely don't need to be playing songs that are jarring or take away from the energy level or the vibe, when compared to the rest of your set list. It's time for the guitarist to either quit pouting or find a different project.
