I nearly sent this as a PM to an admin who posted up 6 or 7 high end basses (at least a grand a pop) on the show your bass thread :smug:

figure a thread would be better.. So, how do you fund your bass buying habits? :cool:

You have started a very interesting thread. I know some people that have alot of high end stuff, and not just basses, but toys of every kind, that I know they can't afford. Ego is a very, very dangerous affliction. I'm retired, and hopefully experienced enough to understand that, in the end, the person with the most toys definitely does not win.

you make it sound controversial..

also, i realise this may be in the wrong forum, sorry, (i was looking in the bass guitar sub section so this was the most appropriate option....)

I used to be a district manager for a retail chain until the economy took a crap and we started closing stores. Now I'm an unemployed, 35-year-old college student.

Last year I came to the realization that I really only need a couple good basses and one decent amp anyway. Anything beyond that is just toys, and I can't afford toys right now.

The United States of America and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts are generously funding - or should I say subsidizing - all my habits these days, including eating and drinking, but not breathing (so far).

Sorry if it sounds like I'm preaching cuz I'm not. It's just that I get kinda depressed, angry, uptight, etc., when some people show off their new TV/Bass/car/Harley/vacation or whatever, and I know for a fact that they are in debt up their wazoo.

That just speaks to a cultural thing in this country in which people would rather appear to be doing well than actually doing well financially. I have yet to see any bass gear anywhere that is worth going into debt for.

I work for a utilities (gas) company. We drill for natural gas. It's a VERY,VERY physically demanding job. So,basically I'm an old man,working a young whipper-snappers job! Not good.... At all!
The pay is most excellent though. More than I could've EVER dreamed of making in the coal mines. And THAT'S great pay! This job is just as hazardous as mining.
The hours?? L-o-n-g,l-o-n-g hours. What's good about it is: I get a week off at a time! But,I pay hell when I'm working though. I work 14 days straight (12 hour shifts),get a week off. By the 10th working day,I'm a zombie. My drive to the job-site(s) on average,is approx. a 1 1/2 hr. drive (one way). So, you may as well say that I work 16 hr. days. Not good for a 43 yr. old man.
Plus,throw in playing 2-3 nights a week gigging.......Steady! Ain't no once-a-month giggin' here,boys. We treat it like a business! Why?? 'Cause IT IS a business!!! On average,we gig approx. 48-50 weeks a year (2-3 nights a week).
I've got a problem though. I cannot,for the life of me,pull the trigger on some new gear. Not even for a USED SX bass!! Even though I know damn well that I deserve it (Hey,I work damn hard for my money!!). I don't know what it is,I just feel insecure (for some reason) about my future.
I need therapy..... Help!!
