You do realize that owning a Veyron would also mean you'd own a piece of history as at one time with was the fastest production car in the world? There's more to that simply "wasting" money. Very limited production, and most were less than $3 million.

I would never pay $25K for a bass. My DREAM bass from Alembic would only cost me $18-19K. I wouldn't pay a penny over $20K, never.

This is the best argument for this topic. Me and Dad swear Coke in a 10oz glass bottle tastes better than Coke from a 2 liter bottle. It's all down to what you like.

actually, a friend of mine who is in the beverage industry told me that the formula in the bottle and can is different.

In fact depending on the size of the bottle, it has a different formula too. He told me that in Japan, the best tasting one is in the small bottle size. And obviously it tastes better drinking out of the bottle than from a glass cup due to the fizz running out.

What are you really buying for your $25k or whatever? How much better do these crazy expensive boutique basses REALLY sound/play than say the best one from your average music store set up properly? Would anyone else really hear it?

I'm happy, I have exactly what I want for less than a tenth of that.

Wow, the most I've paid (real terms) is $1000! What are you, the Rockefellers? (What my wife's grandmother used to say, but imagine it in a thick German accent).

P. S. . Also I might have done better to have bought three $2500 basses twenty years ago, not about twenty five basses of around $500 and selling almost as many over that period.

Seriously though, a few years ago Mrs Dope and I took a road trip vacation. Along the way we stopped at The Low End bass shop outside Nashville, Atlanta Bass Gallery, and a few other stores.

Mrs Dope gave me full permission to buy a boutique 5 string up to $5K. I played some beautiful works of art.

But ultimately, I did not buy anything because nothing played or sounded better than my Peavey.

At first it gives you everything you want from A-Z, so you can't miss. Absolutely you pay a lot to the brand or luthier who is chosen one to do the job. The other is the uniq and quality of the instrument and the dream that you will be the one and only owner of it. This all together gives those k.

For 25K it should look like an art gallery piece and not like just another high end bass (i.e. unique), but useless for gigging. I'd be too scared to take it out of its environmentally controlled display case. Like you wouldn't wouldn't have one?

By "useless for gigging" I'm assuming that most owners of such basses wouldn't dream of using them for gigging.

For $25K I could get an instrument with which I can accomplish the same task I very happily accomplish with my Silvertone Model 1444 I bought at a yard sale for $25.

Those “elements “ and “angels” basses are stupendously ugly and full of rediculous hyperbole. The rest seem to be mainly pre CBS Fenders.

Yeah, those "Ezo art" guitar and basses look ridiculous (and ugly) and all that meta-physics empty speech... uhmmm... makes me think in politicians and their liar populism.

25k's a lot of scratch for a bass (for me). I've played 7k-8k basses (Moonstone) and they are a superior instruments in every way. As soon as you place you fingers on the board, you feel such quality. Tone like no other and craftsmanship that boggled my mind (a blend of purple heart bindings and abalone bindings around the body, blending seamlessly...the instrument is a work of art.)
I would spend 8k on a bass made by Steve Helgeson, but that is the exception to my over-price rules.

Not necessarily, yes, but there's no limit to the good one man can do when he has got the possibility of doing it ... that said, everybody of course can do whatever he wants with his/her resources ..
