My 5th wedding anniversary was earlier this year. It's the wood anniversary for those keeping notes.

Anyways, my wife bought me a brand new Rickenbacker from MF. She didn't know which basses are good or bad, so she googled it and Ricks came up then she ordered one.

She wanted it to arrive on our day, but was told it is a special order, and due to the COVID-19 it wasn't going to arrive until December.

Well the bass obviously wasn't going to be ready in time to hit our anniversary, so my wife's plan was to tell me about it on our anniversary and then I'd wait for it to arrive.

So I told her, no that's ok I don't like the looks of Ricks and you can give me the money instead and I'll put it towards a nice rack EQ I have my eye on (I'm trying to get my freelance mixing and mastering gigs off the ground).

She was disappointed in that decision a little bit, but honestly I have all the basses I need and no GAS for basses right now. I'm a Leo guy anyway...p bass, j bass and musicman right now.

So am I nuts for turning down a brand new Rick?

If my wife bought me a brand new bass only for me to say that I dont like those, I would be in the dog house for days, AND forget anymore surprises from there on..So yeah I voted yes.

Before we got married, my wife offered to buy me a Martin D-28, of which I politely declined, but she was not hurt. Probably more liked relieved...LOL.

Seriously, we had a deal over the years that has worked well for us, but this wouldn’t work for everybody. We’ve always limited gifts of personal items to $100 (at he moment) without consulting the recipient first. In general we don’t spend over $200 on anything without consulting each other, and I had a dickens of a time raising it to that level.

If my wife spent $2000 on a tool I wouldn’t use without consulting me first is insanity, regardless how “nice” it is. While Us musicians can be thrilled with gear and rigs and things of that nature, it can be top quality, really expensive, it’s kind of hard for the giver to see the “niceness” value as overtly as a musical instrument. From the giver’s standpoint, gifting you an EQ offers all the romance of a lawnmower.

FWIW I think that sweater (St. Spidey Day?) is totally awesome! I’d wear it with pride! And if some humorless stick in the mud was offended by it, so much the better.

You’re only 5 years into it and she bought you not just a bass but an iconic somewhat expensive bass and you disappointed her. She could have bought you a $65 Glarry.

I’d try to mend this asap before it stays on her scorecard (they all keep scorecards) as a bad memory.

This illustrates precisely why I tell family and friends DO NOT buy me musical instruments. PERIOD!!! There could be a world of difference between what I like and what they think I might like. Accessories like cords or straps are different, but even there I give very specific parameters (like pics or product numbers).

Near unanimous response. Keep in mind that there are around 4 million bass players who are envious of you having a spouse who goes to these lengths to provide a great gift. Don't blow it.

But . . . the next step is to find something you are pretty certain she really wants (or a trip or an experience of some sort) -- something a bit extravagant -- and buy it for her. Why? Because her purchase of the Ric was a demonstration of her sacrificial love for you. Now, if she's normal, she wants to see a similar demonstration of sacrificial love coming back the other direction. It could even smooth over the rough spot created by the temporary rejection of the Ric.

Man, what a good girl she is!! Don't burst her bubble!-She's trying to do something very nice for you. Even if you Never play it-I'd say "Thank you dear! That's the most thoughtful thing in the world!" Don't tell her "i'd really like to trade in your Great intentions for something i may actually want..." She may pull a Lorena Bobbit on you!..

No, but you're nuts for turning down a special gift that was picked with purpose and meaning - and an instrument is special in a way that recording/electronic gear is not, everyone knows that - from your wife.

Have to say if it was a business partner offering a new Ric I could maybe understand your reply. A friend or even WORSE an S.O? Bad, bad form. Bet that's the last time something really cool like that comes to you from her. She wasn't investing in your music career. She was investing in her relationship with you. You taught her a lesson....

There are two basses I really don't like. Rickys and most Precisions. But if my wife got me either one I'd take it to every gig and get plenty of pics of me playing it - because of what it meant to her.

The thing that's nuts is that you only seem to worry about whether you made the best gear related choice and not about how your wife might feel about this. Sure, every relationship is different but unless your wife is 100% different to every woman I've ever dated or lived with you have probably hurt her feelings badly. And that only means one thing: You're in trouble. And deservedly so IMO.

It's too late to turn back now. My advice? Forget about spending that money on rack gear and do something nice for your wife instead. Apologies would be in order too. Very poor form on your behalf, very, very poor.
