So what is all the hype about????

Wayon, Thunderfunk is one amp I haven't tried yet. But if it sounds as good as the LM II, then I can understand the term "SVT killer" being thrown around. For clean sounds, the LM II, IMHO, IS an SVT killer. Not only does it sound tubey, it does it at low volume levels impossible to do on an SVT. No solid state or hybrid amp can do everything a tube amp does. But for the first time ever, I believe there are some things solid state can do as tonally pleasing or better than tube amps.

Not really. It's more like Sadowskys, LM-II's and Epifani UL's.

Thank you. Some one sees my point. It is like, if you don't have these three pieces of gear, there are about 25 threads per category you are not a part of.

I didn't mean to offend anyone here, but I just wanted to know. I have been a member for about a month, and lurking for about 3. I never saw a thread about the hype. Sorry if I didn't use the search tab, however the search tab is in some ways, not always the best.

I was not asking you to sell me a rig, nor was I asking you to defend your purchase. I wanted to know what is all the hype about. I know MarkBass is light equipment, but does it really do the job? The SVT is said to be "the amp to which all others are measured"... I totally disagree. I think it is the "JCM900 of bass amps" but I would never measure other amps against it. That is like measuring every song up against Stairway to Heaven. You can't compare everything to one great thing.

Personally, I liked the G&K 1001RB over the new SVT's any day of the week. I chose my Marshall gear over the G&K. I know it is all a matter of preference, but the Mark Bass gear seems to be the flavor of the week.

I guess, just let it die...

Kaput, you are right about one thing...the SVT is more like the JCM900 of the bass world rather than the only standard. Just like Marshall and Fender both being the standards in the guitar world for two completely different reasons, there are really two standards in the bass world...the SVT for tube tones, and the Acoustic 360 for solid state tones. Both completely different sounding and wonderful sounding for two totally different reasons. But as much as I loved to hear Jaco wind out on a 360/301 rig, it wasn't my personal idea of great sound. So I consider the SVT the standard, and quite often I forget that solid state amps even counted. You'll have to forgive me. I'm old.

But I can state with all honesty that while Markbass is currently the flavor of the week because it's new to most of us, I believe it's the beginning of a whole new frontier in solid state technology where it can deliver convincing tube tones at a small fraction of the weight. It's only the first step in what will be a long road toward that goal, but it's a giant step. I've seen a lot of hype in 30 years of playing professionally, and this ain't hype. It may not be important to you, but it ain't hype.

Some good insight here. I don't believe that any one piece of gear is a be all, do all for everyone. I'm 56 and vertically challenged. That has never stopped me from schlepping big, heavy gear if it was what I needed to get my tone and volume. At one time it was. That is no longer the case. Thanks to a lot of you on TB, I have been able to decrease the size and weight of my rigs without losing anything, soundwise. That's a big plus for me. Being able to carry my rig for a loud rock gig in the back seat of my old VW Scirocco is like heaven. I don't have to take the van-which doesn't have A/C!!
Is the LM II the be-all-end-all? No. But you have to appreciate all of the goodness that it brings to the table at a most reasonable price.

Seriously, is *another* thread about this necessary? We just had one with the exact same opening last week. Did you read the megathreads? If so, were you able to make an informed opinion from all of the posts? If not, why not try reading them?

"Can anyone give me a good reason" Seriously? Hundreds of pages of reasons (and arguments against some of those reasons) aren't enough?
You know, when I see a post that bores me, I just skip over it. No need for a RED FACED RANT. I can't wait for the next Tube vs SS thread.

I'm afraid we'll be stuck with that one unless Fender decides to shift production out of Mexico. :)

But back to something relevant, modern switching power supplies and class D amplifiers are allowing for some amazing things. Even compared to older solid state designs, modern PS and power amp designs are allowing for unprecedented portability and weight.

Its just unbelievable when I look at the tiny Markbass heads and compare them to my solid state SVT, with its massive, heavy power transformer and heat sinks. Designers have finally figured out how to deal with the issues of these more efficient designs, and I couldn't be happier about it.

How about the difference between MIM and MIA Fenders?

Lol. Just wait 10 years. When I bought my JCM800 in the 90s, people had similar sentiments about them. The 90s aren't far enough behind us for people to be nostalgic about the JCM900s yet.

Hm. Maybe I should load up on JCM900 futures and make a killing in 2017. :) But I digress...

JCM900??? Yechhh!!! I could see JCM800 or JMP, maybe even a high powered JTM45, but no way is an SVT analogous to a JCM900. :spit:

JimmyM, don't you need to start listing yourself as a MB endorser after your recent photo-op deal with Bowser ?? ;)

in any event, you certainly have been pumping up the MarkBass stuff at every opportunity recently.

JCM900... JCM800.... Plexi... What does it matter.

Far too many people here are WAY to anal about spacifics...

I asked what the hype was about, and all I get is an argument about this thread... Let it die... I know I will not get a good answer from anyone... To many wallets with egos to get a real opinion.

At any rate, the idea of fitting a bass rig in the back of a scirocco is amazing. I owned one, years ago... I never had a back seat, and just put everything in it from the hatch.

Buzz seems to be catchy here - one item is talked up by a few happy campers, others try it, get excited, etc, which leads to many jubilant threads. This can make it seem like everybody is raving about "Amp X" and nobody cares about good old "Amp W" any more. You won't see a bunch of people making threads about how they love the same amp they've had for 20 years, but it doesn't mean they don't!

The previous post is right on the money about how to approach the "buzz" and the positive post bandwagon that goes along with it, as well as the backlash that sometimes happens when folks realize the amp in question really doesn't do what they want. Doesn't mean it's a bad amp.

I don't much care for either Markbass or Ampeg; not bashing them, but I don't find the sound, or features, appealing. I'm sure I'm not the only one, just as plenty of people don't like the amps I do use.

TB is a source for information and opinion, but it can sometimes be tough to figure out where one stops and the other begins.

I think the problem is that if I were to open a post in regards to Marshall bass users, I would get 3 people with some info, and others would jump in bashing it, and then the thread dies.

If I create a post about my SVT being all that and a bag of chips... I would be praised by all, for my love of the SVT... It is GOD.

I just wanted to know why this is? Does anyone play anything unique and different? Does nayone think for themselves here? Or do we all follow eachother to the store, and buy the same stuff to be popular?
