Ampeg... Mark Bass...

It seems we have a ton of people with these two companies as favorites. What is the deal? Can anyone give me good reason why Mark Bass is considered to be great like the "Megathreads" make them out to be?

I understand the SVT love in here. I think everyone at one point has lusted over an original, but really... There is more out there....

Anyone here know what I am talking about? Are we all doomed to have Jazz Basses and Mark Bass rigs?

Seriously, is *another* thread about this necessary? We just had one with the exact same opening last week. Did you read the megathreads? If so, were you able to make an informed opinion from all of the posts? If not, why not try reading them?

"Can anyone give me a good reason" Seriously? Hundreds of pages of reasons (and arguments against some of those reasons) aren't enough?

I hear those not converted by accolades and TB peer pressure are being forced at gunpoint to purchase MB products, or replaced by Pod People in the still of night when visions of sheep hurdling fences permeate the ethers.

They haven't got me yet. Strong French Press and a good perimeter watch. But given the package and price MB certainly has certainly shown up on my map of significant forces.

I seriously think everyone need to read the forums less (same with me, Im taking a break after I sell my pedal). All the hype is, to me, is BS. I got so pumped up to try an SVT and 810 and was VERY disappointed when I finally did. It is, IMO, the worst sounding head I have played. Markbass sounded pretty good and the light weight is a big perk, that deserves the attention. My favorite head I have had a chance to play is my Peavey T-Max, you can blend a tube channel and solid state to get a grindy, yet also solid and punchy tone. All that for 150$ off ebay!

Basically what Im saying is dont get caught up in the hype its not worth it, sometimes the best are the worst and the cheapest are the best. In fact, (from my year of experience :P ) I usually find myself pleasantly surprised at the quality of cheap gear and throughly disappointed with the expensive stuff.

To each his/her own. I've got an old (80's) SVT, and it rocks.

I'm not really sure what the hype is about either.

I did try the LittleMark II today (review):

It's good. That's about it. I'd recommend it, but there are plenty of comparable amps out there.

It is interesting how many TB'ers are into the LMII, I'm not sure the "bass playing community", as a whole, is as saturated with MarkBass gear however.

After (or if) MarkBass amps have been around & still strong in ten years or so, maybe then the hype will have turned out to be justified! If so, then great!

For what Ive gathered and experienced, the LMII is really popular with jazz artists, which are a large majority of the TB community. Its small, clean sounding, and compliments a good 112 or 210, in other words perfect for jazz. Thats not to say it doesnt work for rock, I played some Mike Watt tunes through it and though it sounded great, but for rock the mesa boogies/ampegs/ peaveys of the world have that extra oomph needed for rock.

No offense taken; I just wanted to point out that there are some SVT's that are great. I only know mine; YMMV.

And FWIW, there are those who don't like them; a bassist friend who comes over to my studio to rehearse with his band occasionally says he'd rather use a solid state amp than my SVT. DSFDF (different strokes for different folks).

I tried out MarkBass before I was aware of these forums. I was looking for new amp options, saw a big expensive MB stack at GC, tried it out, and was extremely impressed. Then I saw the LMII next to it, plugged into a MB front ported 15" cab. I got the same tone out of that rig. So I decided then to save up for a LMII.

Since I acquired the LMII, I've gotten a Bergantino HT210S and a MB 151HF (the same 15" cab I tried out at GC). I'm extremely happy with the big sound and portability of my rig. The only thing it lacks is the ability to get a nice tube-style overdrive sound. I'm investigating the options for that now. I'll probably get one of those DHA tube OD pedals.

Well, here's where my opinion differs. In the sonics department there may be plenty of competitive choices, but the total package of the MB stuff has appeal, especially to those with urban gigging profiles. Light light light, small, and to many, not compromising what they want in tone and interface and volume.

I'm sure they are more than just "on the radar" at other MI amp manufacturers because of this combination ; }

Greenboy is exactly right. If all you want is clean tubelike tones, Markbass is unbeatable. And whether you like SVT's or not, they are the standard by which all tube amps are measured. Some people don't want clean and tubelike, so the Markbass is not for them. Some people don't want the tube sound, so Ampeg is not for them. Wonderful. There are literally thousands of different amps out there, and a million different possible combinations.

So play what you want but don't question MY choices.
