So what is next? (music)

There is a commercial for iPod nano where a music video is playing. A young woman is singing. A stack of different colored units disappear to show all the color selections. Anyway this woman is singing this song - very simple but wild and creative style that I've never heard before. Whatever this style is, I would say it has a future.

"1, 2, 3, 4" by Feist?

You must have missed Alanis Morrisette, Sinead O'Connor, Macy Gray, Melissa Ethridge, That Winehouse chick/ whine bag if you ask me, etc.

I guess that's the whole point of this thread, people are so oblivious to what has come before that like fashion, everything becomes New again at some point.

Until musicians in rock learn to play, write, and be original, instead of another clone of what's in fashion, you're stuck with rap, whiner crap, and wannabe rock.

I find that is true with all corporate entertainment, products ect- everything today is a rehash-

Exciting new music is being made today, but it's under the radar

Here are some of the most creative and innovate bands, artist that I have discovered-

Melt Banana- They are great musicians- remind me of Captain Beefheart meets Minutemen in Japan

The Lucky Bishops- Great musicians, creative 60's inspired music

Idiot Saint Crazy- Amazing Avant Garde guitarist from France

Yolk- A band Idiot plays with

Battles- cool math prog rock band from NY

Bass2X- some really inspired jazz

Idiolalla- drums and singing, that's all- weird stuff

Minus the Bear I feel are doing something very cool these days. Fun songs with awesome names (e.g. Lets get drunk and throw up!, Booyah Achieved, I lost All my Money at the Cockfights etc). Great guitar work, and overall sound.

Bloc Party (UK band, not really my thing). They're 15minutes has kind of passed I think, don't hear much from them these days!

There was a scottish band called Aerogramme who are outstanding. How often do you see 4 BIG hairy guys, and one skinny bald guy, go from piano and violin to explosive hard rock? I'm so gutted they have disbanded (anyone in Texas will have a chance to catch their last show!!!).

Anyone in the UK will either whole heartedly agree or hit me but - Biffy Clyro. Amazing vocals, well thought out lyrics, fantastic drums. Another Scottish band. New album called Puzzle is probably their best work so far.

I also have a soft spot for Feist atm. 1-2-3-4 is brilliant - great video too!

Thrash unreal, on a completly unrelated note, by Against Me! is an awesome song.

Basically, music in the mainstream notoriously just rips off music from "underground" bands 1-5 years later. So, there have been some good recommendations here, and my suggestion is to pick up a copy of the magazine "Under the Radar" and check out some of the bands in there. It will not show you all the best bands of today and does not represent heavier bands, but it's the best single recommendation I can give.

Music is not at all stagnant or stale. It never has been. It's just about finding the real creative bands.

There's also another commercial I see where this woman is singing and there's a guy harmonizing below her - she's saying something about "But I don't know...is this the part where you let go" (something like this). It's the WORST possible song to use for any product, because it's a "downer" song, but I just melt when I hear it - her voice is SO good and attractive. Sorry for the derailment. If anybody knows who this is, please let me know. I can't remember the company or product.

1 2 3 4 by feist is bassically female chilled out indie music, there is HEAPS of it on Tripple J in Australia. There are other similar artists like sarah blasco and camille (to some extent). Very french influenced, pick up a so frenchy, so chic cd and you will see.

I love how i-pod ads bring great indie or not so well known bands that are AWSOME into the spotlight. The did it with the frattellis as well and some others.

This is great info to know. I really never even had any idea what "Indie" music sounded like anyway.

Thanks

indie is a broad genre of non-mainstream somewhat experimental music. It can be acoustic or rock or electro (to an extent). The more acoustic stuff is what you are looking at.

There are also plenty of more dissonant and emotional bands similar as opposed to light hearted such a angus and julia stone, even death cab for cutie (most famous indie band ever).

Lilly Allen also has alot of that sort of light hearted chiled out indie pop stuff.

There are plenty of bands that are pushing the envelope, maybe you just have to stop listening to the radio.

+2

Behold . . . the Arctopus
Alcest
Caina
Whitehouse
Merzbow (I know, been around a while . . .)
+1 on Battles and Melt Banana, I've never heard the others though
The Boredoms
anything involving John Zorn
. . . whatever. There's a lot of good **** out there. I personally vomit at labeling Van Halen and Nirvana somehow massively amazing and innovative . . .
The "sound music" has been done. I was listening to some yesterday.
It all depends on what hits the little buttons in your soul. My list ranged from "technical weirdness" to "soft and deeply emotional" to "crazy" . . . I don't go for the rock styles you seem to favor, but there's new, innovative, amazing **** out there in all the different genres. Just don't expect the media to bring the good stuff to you . . .
