Most over-rated bass ever, yet somehow the coolest looking. Seems like behind every great Ric tone is some heavy modding and lotsa help, a la rack effects. And it's usually an anal nerd playing one. You know, the trigonometry fans who don't get laid and never let anyone touch their bass cause it will get a scratch. And then you find out everyone who plays them in public records with Fenders. Okay, the real secret is if you pay THOUSANDS of dollars, then you MUST love it. And they are soooo sensitive if you question the Ric or comment in any negative way.

Yet for some damn reason that bass mesmerizes me and I constantly think of getting another one. Maybe RICS have spells put on them. I murdered my only RIC.

Then I heard Al Cisneros of OM/Shrinebuilder and the curse returns....

They look cool and sound great, but they're heavy, have clunky necks (not all, but most) and the angled edges make for an uncomfortable session if you're a big fatass like me...

Harleys are over-rated too. You have to ask because of the RIDICULOUS PRICE GOUGE.

Gibenbacker......maybe the worst combo bass name ever. I'm not weeping. I had a RIC and Gibs. I play Fender and Ibanez vintage for a reason. It's the great massive cutting tones rather than mud-farts. They actually feel "good" to hold as well.

Here we go again......

Rickenbackers have "their" sound. They can be "growly", "clanky", edgy, you name it. They're not the most versatile bass, but they have their own sound. I have yet to find another bass that sounds like one.

If you like early Geddy Lee, Chris Squire or Roger Glover, then you'll like a Ric.

BTW, I'm the owner of a '73 Jetglo 4001 and an '89 Mapleglo 4003.

I think they have a cool sound as long as its a good one. They seem to vary quite a bit. A friend of mine has a 74 that is outstanding. Sounds kinda piano like. Great for sticking out in a mix, maybe not for blending in.
