So what's the stereotypical "Dad" amp?

I've spent the last 13 years trying to put together a sensible granddad set up. Way past the dad amp now. lol

I don't understand any of these threads. Honestly, nothing about my preferences in bass gear changed when I became a dad (which wasn't until I was almost 40 and had been playing for 25 hears).

I know dozens of musicians who became parents long after they became musicians. Same thing. Nothing about their gear changes I'm a notable way. The one exception would be transitioning to lighter or ampless gear.... which the entire industry seems to be doing, so we can't exactly pin that on dads.

Once the kids come along, we continually buy gear, not for us, but to hand down to them... That's the excuse I give the wife.

A "Dad Amp" is the one that replaces all the gear you sold when you got married and figured your playing days were over...then, when your kids reach the age that they want to start playing you need an amp so you can jam with them. For me that was a Hartke Kickback 15. Fast forward 25 years...my son graduates from law school and says "Dad, let's start a band"! Imagine my joy! Not only do I get to play in a kick-ass rock band (Link Removed), I can finally afford all that gear I GASed over in the 70's. LOL, that's my "Dad Amp" saga.

I still own a Peavey Mark III 400 BH head..... that doesn't work because it needs a complete recap that would cost more than its worth. If that's not a Dad Amp, what is?

I think that's actually a Mark IV, the only difference being it has push buttons for some of the functions instead of mini-toggles. These amps were LOUD, and still surprisingly heavy considering they were solid-state.

Friggin' HUGE output transformer in there, with the big aluminum heat sink bolted to it. The rest of the inside is mostly empty space with a couple PCB boards. I should probably just sell mine for parts while there are some of these still working, it's just a nostalgic paperweight now.

I had two of these heads for my stereo rig back in the day. Great heads!

Mine was merely the Centurion, less knobs, fewer power. But still a great head, and indestructible.
