So... When did you leap to 5+ strings?

I started playing bass in 89, had several 2nd hand 4 strings. 2 years later, a local store got a Samick 5 string that looked cool so I saved my pennies and bought it. So my first "new" bass was a 5. It's long gone now, but I've primarily played 5 strings since. I've owned a 6 for a short time but someone wanted it more than I did, and it walked off. I've had a 4 string or 2 around for this and that over the years as well.

I never fell into the "HEY!!! I've got a B so I've GOT to use it... ALL THE TIME" camp, mostly because so many of the B's have been so lackluster... If I had been a better player when I made the switch and had better gear, I'd probably have used the B string A LOT more...

I got a 5'er in 2004. At the time i wasn't playing enough for it to really sink it. So it sat......and sat......and sat. Finally, we started gigging again and I was only really comfortable with my MM Sabre and my P-Bass so my Modulus 5-string got relegated to a road case. Until a good friend bought it from me - so i'm sad to say, i never fully embraced it and I really regret that. (largely cuz now i can't afford a new 5 and i'd like to have it back....sniff):crying:

I played a 4 string Fender PBass for about 10 years, and started reading Bass Player magazine, where I learned about other brands and types of bass. I found a Spector Q5 for $150 in the local Sam Ash (someone had shimmed the neck with cardboard, and it had a really bad setup). It was confusing at first, but after some dedicated practice with scales and intervals, it stuck. Now I enjoy a nice fiver as well as a nice four-stringer.
