So why do so many people begin their threads with "So?"

Just asking. I suspect it's a verbal tic that has become a written one.

Oh, yes, it's definitely a verbal tic in my humble imagination...way back in 2009 I listened to Ira Flato's NPR show about science related subjects...he had guests from the science world and when asked a question they always began with "so..."
I imagine it spread into common jargon...
I work for the Reuse Program at the University of Minnesota...I find myself inundated with "so..." all the time. Probably a scholar-ish thing...
 
So my uncle pointed out the whole starting sentences with “so” to me about 15 years ago. Said he noticed it mostly in academic circles back then but it’s since gone mainstream. Now I use “well” and “so” interchangeably and don’t even think about it anymore.

I read back to this post...2009 was a bit right...I'm sure it was before, tho...no one's wrong here...
 
so anyway , guess it's time to practice ...
