So why do so many people begin their threads with "So?"

So , let's ponder the word/phrase so some more shall we ........no , wait just one minute here ! I believe Aristotle also asked this question and well , we all know the ramifications of an actual answer to this age old question .

So.............I've been complaining and ranting about the "SO" for starting a sentence for the past 4 years now. My wife has stopped listening to me and goes off into the other room every time I start my rant.

Many people who generally are under the age of 45 (sorry for the generalization) speak English strangely! Starting sentences with "so". Using "up speak". And saying sentences of declaration in question form. Example............"Hello, my name is Bob?" "I play the bass?"

"So" has crossed over to TalkBass and just about everything else.

I hope that these goofy English trends pass away.

As in:

Interviewer - "So, why is it happening like that?"

Interviewee - "Yeah, so . . . that's a good question."

We live in an age where people deliberately misuse pronouns. I don't think goofy English trends are passing away, they're just getting worse. But I'd happily live with most of the other goofiness in exchange for correct pronoun usage.

I think that "so" at the beginning of a sentence is one of the very few examples in the English language of what in Japanese would be a "softening particle". Something that makes the following statement or question a little less abrupt. In Japanese it would be "jaa" or "anou".

So that's just my opinion.
