I have 5 ish good hardcases...I need a decent soft case for lighter travel when we do not have much room in the van.

Soft cases...which ones work well and protect?

My favorites are the Mono cases and the Sadowsky Portabag, which both seem to provide the best (IMO) ratio of protection/light weight.
The iGig bags are also cool, and it you are on more of a budget, the ProTec Contego (if I have that name right) is very nice for the price.

I just bought a new Warwick bass, and was dissapointed because it included "only" a gig back. But when I saw it, wow! it's amazing and held me back from buying a hard case for my new bass. It has about triple the padding of a gig bag I had bought years ago from musician's friend. If you can get your hands on one of these bags, you'll be satisfied.
Well, if you're looking for any alternative to the traditional HSC, a PolyFoam case works pretty well for anything short of taking your bass on a plane. GC markets a couple of brands; their house RoadRunner brand is more basic but very good, and I use one for my main fiver. Lighter than a HSC of comparable dimensions, yet it protects just as well against the bumps and scrapes of everyday handling. GC also stocks the WolfPak brand; the generic Polyfoam case for electrics is similar in most respects to the RoadRunner, but has backpack straps and a larger, form-padded gear pocket. I'm looking at one for my main skinny-stringer.
I just bought the Wolfpak, and it is amazing; a perfect fit for my EBMM Stingray. It also fits my P-basses. My jazz bass, however, doesn't quite fit as the upper horn is a tiny bit too long. Really superior workmanship throughout.
i have an igig bag/case...it is amazing! not super light, but i love it. fits my 7.5lb bass and my markbass f-1 with all the cables/accessories and tools i need for any gig, worn on my back, leaving my hands free to carry my one cab. perfect for me.
Theres several out there now with an inch or more of padding to choose from. When I had a warwick I found its gigbag poor qaulity compared to the bc rich deluxe gigbags I had for padding and construction qaulity. The BC rich's have 30mm of padding, the guitar ones fit most basses and their bass ones fits pretty much anything else that wont fit in the guitar one for length (Thunderbird basses barely fit the guitar version). Though they dont have a lot of room for accessories, they fit most anything bass wise.
Top of the line roadrunner gigbags are also excellent choice imo as long as the bass isnt overly wide or long.

I have found a good soft case with a decent fit and good amount of padding will cost a few bucks. My favorites are Levy's Pro Series and Renunion Blues.
