Sold the Ampeg today, mixed feelings...

I look at it like this.
You have to keep an SVT head but you don't have to take it to every gig.
Some days, the 3Pro is just good enough; some days it ain't!

I thought my SVT-III PRO was a fine sounding amp, but I don't miss it since I still have my CL. I've been an Ampeg owner and user since the very early 90's, except for the brief period I used a GK400RB/Peavey cab after my other Ampeg rig burned in a club fire... I learned then what it was like to be Ampeg-less, and know I would have SERIOUS regrets if I sold my CL and two Ampeg 4x10 cabs. There is no equal, I don't care how much it weighs.

The only departure I've ever made from a brand after long-term dedication was Fender basses. Do I miss my Fenders or regret switching to my StingRay? No. I wouldn't go back to only Fender, but I do G.A.S. for a Precision for it's looks and tone.

I'm loving my TC Rebelhead, but the SVT-II pro and 8x10 is staying. Use it for rehearsals and the occasional big gig. I do, however, have a SVT 4pro that will be leaving soon. Great amp, just redundant now that I have a lightweight and a heavyweight rig....

The Rebelhead keeps me very happy with it's sound and bonus features. Not to mention I can tuck it in by my drummer's ride cymbal on a corner stage and still have room for the mixer on stage....can't do that with the fridge....

Starting to reek of tall poppy syndrome, this thread

Ummm...what?

Wikipedia said:
Tall Poppy Syndrome (TPS) is a pejorative term used in the UK, Australia, New Zealand and Canada to describe what is seen as a populist, levelling social attitude. Someone is said to be a target of tall poppy syndrome when his or her assumption of a higher economic, social, or political position is criticised as being presumptuous, attention seeking, or without merit. Alternatively, it is seen as a societal phenomenon in which people of genuine merit are criticised or resented because their talents or achievements elevate them above or distinguish them from their peers.

Although I disagree that this is an attention-seeking or snobbish thread, you're welcome to say that it is. But only after you lug an SVT up and down three flights of stairs. :p

While I can certainly appreciate the new super lightweight heads available these days, I have yet to find one that sounds as big and full as my 6Pro. I do have a 13 lb Walkabout head, which is a stunning little tone machine, but even that won't do what the 6Pro does. So, for the time being, I'm keeping my 50lb monster.

+1 I had a Magnavox Ampeg stack years back and sold it (like a dummy). I played smaller rigs for several years. About 4 months ago I bought a SVT6Pro and an 8-10. Not looking back any time soon. But that's what I love about this forum. Of the THOUSANDS of bassists here, there are no two in exactly the same situation at any given time. Enjoy your MarkBass!

DUDE, if you are going up three flights of stairs its going to be a small gig, take the little rig....

I have a serious criticism against assassins who always use the Desert Eagle 50 cal for hits. WAKAWAKAKERBOOM, wakes the dead, sends body parts to join the dead and just flat draws all the wrong type of attention. Sometimes you need that sort of effect, and even though there is no such thing as OVERKILL only KILL, thats fine and all, HOWEVER...

Just sometimes Finesse calls for a silenced 22 for those close quarters hits.

Haha nah, I've never had to go up three flights of stairs with the 4-Pro, but I did have to go up and down one flight of stairs on a weekly basis with a 100lb rack. I miss the sheer power that the 4-Pro could pump out into that room (large-ceiling church that holds 2-300 people), but I sure as heck don't miss the weight and the hassle of fitting that damn rack in the back of a Toyota Corolla. :spit:

No Pain - No Gain.

You guys dumping off your SVT's will realize you can't completely replace the sound. You can synthesize and anesthetize and try and get close, but the real thing is the real thing. Sort of like riding a RICE CLONE instead of a Harley. You might think you're cruising fat, but really? Bwahahahaha

Some convince themselves they are close enough and pretend they are happy, HA. Others realize the error in their ways and eventually become purists in their waining years.

To Quote the California GOV, You'll be back.

OVER

Here I am in my waining years (53 years old, meaning I don't like to lift heavy things) and yet I'm with rbonner on this one. I sold my lighter rig (BBE BMax-T preamp into a QSC PLX3402 power amp into a pair of Bergie HT115's) for a 60 pound hand wired, all-tube Reeves Custom 225 bass head and a pair of Reeves 1x15 cabs. Although the Reeves cabs don't weigh all that much different that the Bergs did, the 60 pound Reeves head is alot heavier than the approx 25 pound pre/power amp setup I was using.

But that **T-O-N-E** I get from the Reeves amp is jaw droppingly addictive, and worth every pound and then some!

Just sold my 410HLF two days ago :crying: I loved that cab but I just can't move the beast anymore. My back won't take it. Around 60 to 70 pounds is my limit now and that's just in and out of the van, forget about carrying the thing. For carrying any distance 50 lbs is so far OK.

Oh well, I might have a short memory for the HLF as I'm checking out a used Schroeder tomorrow :)

Keep Low :bassist:

Vetchking Here:

Sometimes you just have to keep the big stuff around. Pla
y in the rec room, basement , garage, etc. I've never found small stuff that sounded like the Big Boys. I'd like to start a 2 x 15" revival. LOL............. Later

Uh oh, now I feel bad confessing that I used my LMII and a B-15 cab on my gig today ;) But hey, it was outdoors and the forecast called for rain (which turned out to be a 2 hour torrential downpour), and I'd really like to not subject my SVT to that. The LMII kicked much ass, too. It's my favorite sounding SS head...I'd love it if it weighed 30 lbs. But it ain't an SVT, so when I do my next gig on Friday, which will be indoors, I shall rock the mighty SVT once again...that is if I can figure out this rattle problem with the cab by then :scowl:

I agree that dead is dead, but sometimes using the big caliber does make a bold statement and sends a different kind of message.

Imagine one of the new tiny, fantastic sounding, super powerful, hi-tech, wonder heads sitting on top of a full size cabinet; believe that too much of that would make your junk shrink; not good :p

When I referred to "Tall Poppy Syndrome" I meant the tendency by some on this forum to diss Ampeg SVT whenever it turns up in a thread or title, simply because it has been acknowledged by many as the "industry standard". Such a term or other compliments seems to offend some to the extent that they have to atack the venerable SVT or come out in defense of "brand X" or "Y" when it has not even been part of the discussion.
Now I acknowledge that I am an avid SVT/Markbass supporter, but I am conditioned by now to expect these random comments every time SVT appears. Anyway, I suppose such discussions are what keep me coming back to this forum. Just my .02.

Although I understand what you're saying (this time ;) ), there are plenty of people who have found that Ampeg isn't actually the end-all, be-all of bass amps as it is frequently portrayed. Don't get me wrong, I love the sound of my SVT-CL. It's quite lovely and grin-inducing. At the time I bought it, and for quite a while afterwards, I thought it was all that and a bag of chips. However, I also found that it's a beast to haul, and my body isn't as forgiving as it used to be. In my quest for a somewhat lighter option for the sake of my body, I found something I like the sound of better than the SVT. At the time, I didn't think it was possible, but (for me) it's true. I will certainly agree that the SVT is the "industry standard", but that doesn't make it "best" for everyone. For many, yes, but not for everyone. This thread is about someone moving on from Ampeg, and the comments have pretty much been on topic - on which ever side of the Ampeg fence they may fall - without much in the way of bashing by either side. Some poking, maybe, but not bashing. :)

+++1. I'll be a young looking 50 next month, (which completely freaks me out at how much fun I've been having..lol) and have just recently gone back to gigging with the my SVT boat anchor(s). I guess I didn't realize how much I missed it. Bandmate's keep tellin me how well rounded the tone is...and of course, w/the svt you don't have to play as hard-especially up high on the neck-to be heard. Always hated that about ss/hybrids. Power tubes have a way of replicating harmonics... . That said, if you've gotta move on, by all means do it.

My deal is that I rest the beast on my leg to lift it in place using leverage. And I've got one of those handy aluminum colapsable dollies I'd recommend to transport it.

Oh, since my preference has been plug and play, I've re-visited the mid range control and never realized what a powerful tone shaper it was...

Happy trails.

ha, Bob, you kill me (pun intended).

Mr Hyperbole himself returns to defend the honor of lead sled mega rigs everywhere. What do you run these days ... like 4 or 6 of these monsters ? And didn't I see some thread by you recently talking about power requirements in the giga-joule range.

that's some funny stuff there boy

to the OP, sorry to go OT, just makes me laugh out loud to read Mr BB's posts sometimes.

continue your discussion please
