It happens sometimes. I lived through the 70’s and had hip replacement surgery so I’m not all original.

Maybe you've only got three bolts then, too? LOL

I went through major surgery in the mid 90's- no telling WHAT they put inside me back then!

My 77 Tele Bass also had 3 bolts.

I've never seen a 3-bolt Precision.

1976 4 bolt *excelsior special edition model• P bass here. But now in hunt for the aforemented 3 bolt super unleaded version. I think comes in a 3 string version standard.

Somewhere above - correctly stated - Fender under CBS was clearing out the parts bin. Some J-basses were 3-bolt; others 4-bolt. The '75 J-bass I used to own, and which a friend of mine still has, was confirmed by the shop I bought it from who makes his living selling period-correct instruments, that my 4-bolt was original.

The problem is incomplete knowledge. Fender advertised the 3-bolt neck, but that does not mean 4-bolt necks were still coming down the line until the old parts were used up.

I'm fairly certain that they are screws and not bolts but, maybe it's a Fender bass-ackward thing like tremolo and vibrato. Reminds me of the time when a wacky guy escaped from Patton State mental hospital near San Bernardino. He cornered a helpless lady in her home and had his way with her. The neighbors heard her screaming and shortly the sirens were approaching with lights a flashing so he ran. Next day the headlines read "Nut, Screws and Bolts!"
