Fender's only made 75 P Basses? Wow, they sure do get around for so few having been made.

Why?

I spent a lot of time cozied up to a 76 P-bass for almost 20 years. I’m certain it had four neck screws.

That guy might be on to something, even if he's from the 70's.
or it will eventually taint the originality out of your bass till there's nothing left!
Worse yet, the taint might spread to your other basses.

It’s not just funny because the guy was flat out wrong. It’s funny because even if he was right, his statement would be profoundly inept.

A bass with the wrong bolt pattern would mean that both the neck and the body had been replaced. That would be a little more serious than being “not all original”. It would be like George Washington’s Ark.

My grandfather had a saying for people like that.

"Sometimes you just gotta let somebody else be the coolest guy in the room".

When expounded upon, what he meant was this. Thay guy is miserable. He has very little joy in his life. So he gets off on knocking people down a peg to bring him a tiny but of joy.

Just smile and let him have that. In fact, thank him for opening your eyes to the truth. Then go about your life with the understanding that you aren't that miserable, thankfully.

In the mid 70s, Fender was digging through their parts bins putting instruments together. There are 3 and 4 bolt examples out there.

You'd have to show me one. To my knowledge, the P has always had 4 screws.

I lived through the 70s, and the 60s before them, and going on towards another four decades since. As I approach my 58th birthday I can confidently say, just like the guy who commented on your bass, I was wong once.
