Some Information Requested

I had a gig last weekend (outdoor) a little humid here in PA. We set up and went through sound check with no problem. Pushed the Tuner (Mute) button on the amp while we went off stage to wait for start time. On return, when I released the Mute I had quite a bit of scratchy static, low output (very quiet sound) and sever distortion of notes. Cleared up after about 3-5 minutes, and was without incident the remainder of the show, although I did NOT use the Tuner(Mute) button again. GK Backline 600 head into an Ampeg 410.
Any ideas? Any suggestions for remedy or prevention?

If it happens again, use an instrument cable to connect the effects loop in and out jacks. They sometimes get corrosion which give the distorted low sound.

Effects loop (return jack) is a good possibility, also could have been debris in the mute switch itself. High humidity could aggravate the issue.
