I'm a new member here but have been reading through a lot of threads in the past few months. I am 28 now, and I started with guitar around age 11. Like many others, I switched to bass when my group of musician buddies needed a bassist in high school. I never looked back as I just connected with and felt the instrument in a way I never did with guitar. I still keep an acoustic around for fun.
I have been trying to get more serious about my playing this year. I finally upgraded my set up by purchasing a Yamaha TRBX604 and an Aguilar Tone Hammer 350. I took them out last Saturday for an audition with a cover band. That's why I wanted to give some thanks.
I was contacted last Thursday and given a list of 5 new songs to prepare for Saturday, plus a couple that I have committed to memory. The new ones were: Car Wash, Boogie Oogie, Brick House, Sara Smile and Good Times. I managed to get them pretty well committed to memory before the audition.
We ran through those on the first go. We also played around a bit with I'll Take You There and Black Magic Woman. Everything went very well. I got a call yesterday from the BL with some compliments and an offer that the spot is mine if I want it. Looks like they have regular gigs 2x a month with a local bar/restaurant, and some others here and there on the weekends. Since I'm a school teacher during the day, I'm thinking the summer will provide a nice opportunity to catch up with the rest of the band's song list.
I was quite nervous before the audition because it was my first true audition. But I found a lot of awesome advice here about preparing the songs, setting a good rapport with the band members, showing up, and keeping in mind that "I'm auditioning the band, too."
