Give the 5 some time! It's not going to feel as good because you're simply not used to it. I believe the only difference is the EBMM necks are treated.

Which by the way, I love the feel of the EBMM neck, so smooth and fast.

Hey man just so you know... you're not alone, I'm actually in (sorta) the same spot, I'm looking for a bass, but no bass can compare to my Ray34, even the real Rays wont work for me, the only ones I actually liked were the classic rays but still.... nothing feels like home

and as mentioned before, it's all about the special conection you make with your bass, I will NEVER let go of my bass(es), they are a part of me, as much as I'm part of them

I'm starting to believe the SBMM isn't just a cheap version of a EBMM!

I have a Vaccaro that has the hottest and best sounding J pickups I've ever played. The pickups are Korean, and make my real fenders sound like crap in comparison. I also now have a bass with Gibson EMG clones that sound better then my EMGs. They are not physically better, just sound better to me.

The combo of body wood, neck build, paint/lacquer and even age can make two basses sound and feel totally different. I hate to admit it, but my Steinberger Q4 with the factory Bart's is much better sounding then my Q4 with EMGs, in my opinion.

It's a matter of ear taste. You have had the SBMM for so long you are comfortable with her. Don't fret, it's natural.

It's just crazy how these things are sometimes.

Sometimes you bond with an instrument regardless of cost. We have seen it with fender MIM vs. MIJ vs MIA vs. Squier. There are owners of each that will swear that It's the best they have ever played.

A premium wood, expensive pickup, top of the line hardware, multi thousand dollar bass is a fairly safe bet for a great instrument. It may not work well at all for you because it doesn't sound or feel right.

When an instrument does feel and sound just right, listen. It doesn't happen all that often. You may not find that magic again even with the same model.
