I have seen these increasingly at shows, near the soundtable, they have a clear cylinder with a spiral electrode, and a mesh screen at the back, with a clear plate on the back as well. What the heck are these?

Someone help me with this type of microphone...

Your description is hard to follow. It sounds like a korby mic to me, but I doubt your starting to see those alot at shows considering its a several thousand dollar mic. A pic would def help, im a big mic guy so if I saw a pic id def be able to tell you what it was. It sounds a little like a royer 121. Was it on a guitar cab? Whats a sound table?
No, not a Korby. It's a clear acrylic cylinder with a spiral electrode inside of it, terminating in a flat acrylic disc at the back.
If its near the FOH its gotta be one of 3 things.
A. A talkback mic, though this would be an odd talkback mic so I doubt it.
B. A stereo mic for recording the FOH. This does sound a little like a stereo mic to me but im not sure.
C. A measurement mic. This seems the most likely to me. Measurement mics are usually pretty wierd looking and not really designed to be used to actually listen to anything. It makes sense that one of these would be up there near FOH so they can measure dB's and make sure they are violating any sound ordanices.

At first i thought it might be one of the Royer R-121/122/122V mics like bluestarbass said, and again i am gonna have to agree with him on the fact that if couldn't be some kind of a mearsurement mic for dB or possibly to a real time analyzer to be able to make adjustments after the fans are all in the venue.
