I love my Schecter Studio 6, but it seems that I'm playing my Stagg fretless bass more. The tone isn't superior by far, but I guess I just like fretless passive basses more. I'm considering defretting my Schecter. Would that alone give me a more natural tone, or should I get the luthier to bypass the preamp and make only the passive EMG-HZs work? Should I throw out the EMGs and get new pickups?

maybe just replace the pickups on the one thats already fretless? then youd still have a fretted to play if you needed one. just a thought.
Well, I want a 6 string fretless bass, and I can't afford to buy another bass. I have a back-up fretted 4 if I ever needed it.
FWIW:
I defretted a bass once and regretted it and would never do it again. Liked it much better fretted and a refrett is about $300. The Schec I had was an NT and that makes the mod even more critical. The setup on a fretless is crucial. Lot of guys do it and are quite satisfied. But I pretty much recommend against against any mod that's not reversible - for free let alone added cash. Money spent on the mod could be applied to a done deal you can play and decide before you buy. If you can't afford a bass you can't afford a refrett which would make it a one way trip - good or bad.
