Randomly surfing videos on Youtube, I started watching old tour/backstage/studio videos of Metallica. Then watched a few Cliff videos and so on...

And then it hit me. I'm 25. He died when he was 24. I SUCK.

You can agree or disagree, whatever. I think Cliff Burton gets the kind of hype and credit that he does, not only because of what he wrote, but the fact that he was so young. That means he wrote Anesthesia when he was 22? 23? Are you kidding me? I still can't even PLAY the whole thing, let alone write something like that. Orion?! I mean, had he lived.....who knows. I think it's safe to say he hadn't come close to reching his musical peak.

Oh, and Geddy was 27 when YYZ was released, so he was 25, 26? when he wrote that? INSANE.

I suck. Haha.

Well, you have the rest of your life to catch up. I played in my late teens and quit, and just started back up, I am 40 now. I guess if you want to be a rockstar, quit your job and play all you can and live the music.

It is pretty amazing to me how good these got at so young an age.

THAT is something.

Writing songs in your 20's is nothing astounding. In fact, many people do their best work at that point in their life. But to do what the Beatles did -- create masterpiece after masterpiece and change music forever -- while they were kids, is mind boggling.

No disrespect to Cliff, but I'd say "She's Leaving Home" is a little more musically significant than Anesthsia. :smug:

Favorite Maiden song for the win, anyone else prefer Paul era to Bruce era? Not to knock Mr. Dickinson, saw Maiden over the summer and was blown away at the way he could sprint around the stage and not miss a note, that guy has incredible talent, but I just prefer the writing style of their self titled album and Killers more more, with phantom of the opera, drifter, genghis kahn, purgatory, and well, every single track on those 2 albums. What do you guys think?

If that's your thing. I personally hate the Beatles with a passion and didn't like any of their songs.

Burton however... genius

Each new generation is ever more effort-averse. It is the nature of a consumer society, the corporations will give you what you want. And the number one rule of marketing is that consumers are greedy and lazy.

Kids back then had less to distract them, if we spent all the time we did on Playstations, iPhones, Facebook, and dare I say TalkBass, playing Bass, we'd be as good as someone 3 times our age (or something).

Sign of the times. I am not any less guilty of it.
