It was time to change strings on two of my basses; my Yamaha TRBX605 and my Ibanez BTB675. The 605 really sounded great with Ernie Ball Cobalt Flats and I *thought* the BTB was good with D'Addario NYXL's. In cleaning I broke one of the EBCF's and didn't have a replacement set (and the retail is now $45!!!!). I did have one set of NYXL's in the drawer.
I put my last set of NYXL's on the Yamaha. Quite a different, but nice sound. OK- I'll leave these on for now until I break down and cough up the $45 for some EBCF's.
Lately I was not really happy with the BTB and NYXL's. For whatever reason the G string was more strident and louder than the other strings. On gigs I fought for the sound and was never happy with it. I was even thinking about selling the BTB. I needed to change strings and was thinking "cheap". So I just bought some Ernie Ball Slinkys for $25 (which made my Gio 6er sound really good :0. I was kind of suprised at how much I liked the sound of the Slinkys on the BTB. So the last two gigs this weeks my BTB saw some action. I REALLY liked the sound. One gig was on my GK amp the other on the house amp and both were easy to dial in.
Getting back to my Yamaha... The NYXL's sound good on it, but too similar to my other basses, the BTB and a Fender Jazz 5 with Sunbeams. And much as I like the sound of the NYXL's on my 605, having also had Pure Blues, which saved this bass from return, there is nothing like the EBCF's on that bass. I did find ONE retailer that had the EBCF's for $36 and I jumped on a couple sets which might be here today.
Until now my 605 was my number one gigging bass. But I'm digging the Fender and most especially the BTB with Slinkys! So I'm going to keep the EBCF's in the drawer for a while and put them back on the 605 when the NYXL's beg to be changed- or I just want that EBCF sound back.
Sorry for the length... I've got nothing better to do this morning
