I'm completely new to the world of recording. I received Cakewalk SONAR 4 as a gift last year and I've been fooling around with it for a long time. Now, I'm looking to record my band and I don't want to go and buy a different peice of software since I know my way around SONAR and I have heard it is the best. I don't have anything to record with besides my stock soundcard and my wimpy computer mic. I was thinking of purchasing a Firepod and a few mics.

Will the Firepod be compatible with SONAR 4? Will I be able to plug in 3 mics at once and have them all on 3 seperate tracks?

If not, is there any computer-based hardware that I should be looking into besides the Firepod? :help:

We use Sonar too. Yes, Firepod is compatible. I know there are opinions out the wazoo about what is the 'best' - but I have found all versions of Sonar from v.2 and up to be excellent solutions for multitrack recording and composition.

as a former user of SONAR, i say dont buy another sequencer. that one will do all you need it to do.

i use a Firepod and love it. you'll be able to record 8 tracks at once with it.

for other options you could check into the Edirol products.

+1 for the Firepod. But most of the hardware out there should work fine. It's all standardized stuff that's designed from the ground up to work with whatever ASIO compatible DAW software you have (Sonar, Cubase, Ntrack, etc).

I've used Sonar to do a few albums and several projects now, and I like it enough that I maintain a PC (rather than using a Mac) just so I can use it.

You can get a Firepod, or look on ebay for a bargain (couldn't hurt). I got a Terratec EWS88MT for $100. 8 I/O in a breakout box with MIDI, and S/PDIF on the back of the PCI card. And- they've put out new drivers for this old, no longer manufactured card. Pretty good.

Hey, just go get what you need- but sometimes, if you take a minute to look, you'll find what you need at a basement price.

Sonar has a great forum at Cakewalk.com. You should troll around there for info, there is a wealth of it (relating to Cakewalk products and recording techniques in general) - good stuff!

I use Sonar 4.0 w/ a pair of Motu 896s and love it. Firepod should work fine as well. Sonar is a robust program for audio and midi, and I actually prefer it to ProTools. Here are some links to some fairly recent work I've done in Sonar:

If you also could use a small mixer, consider the Mackie Onyx mixer, which has an optional firewire interface, which will plug into your computer and works great with SONAR. I've been using this setup for a while now, and I love it. Much easier to work with a real mixer, and not the tiny interface controls of most firewire/usb interface boxes.
