Songs that epitomize a particular bass tone?

Hands Of Doom - Black Sabbath. That bass intro is warm and tubey. It typifies (imho) flats played the Geezer way up over the end of the neck.

Yes - Yours is No Disgrace. Typical Rickenbacker clank (the most musical clank I can think of!), warm tubey tone again but with roundwounds played with a pick. Very clear on this track.

Roundabout by Yes is a classic Rick sound.

You said "not too bright", which implies there is brightness, but not too much that it becomes excessive.

I can't think of any P bass examples off hand, but things like this are my definition of bright and punchy.

OK, good point! Perhaps I should have said "pleasantly NOT bright".

And I agree - your link is both bright and punchy. It's bit odd, since it sounds like part of the bass line is recorded and much of it is a solo, so I'm not clear on how it would sound in a mix.

The 'different strokes" thing applies here, too...that cut is about as extreme an opposite to the Sam & Dave number as I can think of. It's not a style of music that appeals to me or that I ever listen to....but if it helps define the word "bright", I think it's right on target.
