Sonny's a buddy of mine, and to the world. I love my Bluebeard!! I'm pretty sure the secret is in the Maryland state quarters he drilled holes into to use as washers... but anyways...
I don't do the doom thing, or even a heavy band (anymore). I do play loud noise-pop/shoegazy stuff, though. Luckily for my bands, the distorted guitars are so over the top on the high end, the booming low mess of sound that exudes from the bluebeard is never really buried.
It's not an "always on" pedal for me, either. But when it is, it does the wall-of-sound thing better than any other fuzz i've played... which, unfortunately, does not include the 'stache. So i cannot compare the two. But, as others have said; worst case scenerio is you get one, don't like it, and flip it for a minimal $ loss.
