It’s actually the AP version... so it’s steel on silk with a plastic like covering
I’m still very much enjoying my Gerold Genßler strings. I have a combined set of Basso E & A and B-roque D & G (naked gut).
Here is a new recording of the strings on my 7/8 german flatback (ca. 1850) recorded with a Neumann U47 in front of the bridge:

So it's plastic over metal? Could you snap a picture please? I'd love to see it.
Has anyone got experience of both the APs and the Basso strings and could talk about the difference between them? I've read all the way through this thread but can't find that precise comparison. Thanks!
Is this in response to my question? I think AP and Basso are both metal wound silk, no?
Gerold has discontinued production indefinitely of gut/gut wound strings due to poor supply/quality of gut
Yes this is right - the strings look like they are silk - wrapped with metal wire - and then coated or wrapped with plastic. (Not all strings, just the ones that specify all three components)
Direct from Gerold this morning:

I got a set of BASSO back in March, and while I can't compare them to the AP, I think they sound great both ways. Pizz sings out loud, full, and clear. Gut-like for sure, but I don't feel the need to put a Spirocore E on there. Arco is a great sound and very easy to bow. I think if one has the bow in one's hand around half the time, one should go the BASSO route. Money well spent.
Does anyone have experience with the Sonores tailpiece? I'm in the market for a new tailpiece and was curious if anyone found Gerold's tailpieces make as much of a difference as the website suggests.
They seem to have a bit of a different approach behind them? That the tailpiece is heavier to balance out the lighter tension strings vs a steel string setup where the tailpiece is lighter to balance with a heavier tension string. I'm pretty dumb when it comes to luthiery and setup stuff but that's just what I've gathered from reading what little info online there is. I just know my bass seems to like Sonores wayyyyyy more then anything else I've tried so am curious.

If the inside of your bass is loose (ie soundpost has some give) then usually the outside of your bass can compensate ( ie heavy tailpiece, tall bridge, low saddle). If you have a very tight soundpost then sometimes adding significant weight on the top can make your bass sound worse.
I know one common thought is that a light tailpiece is better for pizz and a heavy one is better for arco (generally speaking of course), so maybe this will make your bass happy
