Double Bass Sonores Gut Strings by Gerold Genssler

I've been following this thread with some interest, particularly since I've learned that Gerald has been making his strings with a silk core. I have always been a huge Velvet fan, and have been considering biting the bullet and getting some of these strings. Here is my question - does he make a string that would be comparable to Velvet Anima? If so, I should probably start saving....

I'm not really a gear or string fanatic ... I'll probably just get the current set of AP "Whatever" and see how they sound ;) Sorry that it's not a more in-depth process with me!

I wonder, who was it saying, that the sound gets out of the fingers ;) or to quote Phil Donkin again: "Gear is not the answer!!" :)
even if it's (sometimes) fun to look around and check it out...it's not too bad to bear it in mind...:p

they’re the silk core, like what Szymon and Bozo are using. He is not making wrapped gut right now as there isn’t quality gut available.

I’ll be interested to hear how you get on. If you listen to the video of Szymon playing Bottesini earlier up the thread it’s possible to hear a slight (bow speed/pressure related?) modulation of the pitch after he hits the low b flat/concert c around 0:50. Hard enough to play in tune without strings that can’t stand up to vigorous bowing without the pitch becoming unstable, if indeed that is what is happening.

I had a set of red label basso from Gerold around 7/8 years ago and then an arco-oriented set of metal covered guts. I decided to move on from the guts after the g string started to come unwound around 4th position in the days leading up to an audition. Noisy (during left hand shifting), sticky windings. Adjusting the bow position in relation to the bridge was impossible mid stroke with how rough they were.

The red labels were interesting but the small diameter and loose feel under the bow didn’t give me the possibilities of generating the heft that a set of steel strings did. I imagine and certainly hope things have moved on since then.

Were did you get this info? Can't find on Gerolds site.

I think a pure silk string would be more of a white-coloured string compared to a plain gut string.

Ah, sorry! I was thinking about the "plastic" wrapped silk strings - in comparison to the plastic wrapped gut strings (like the Wrap X set was on G and D, which is now made of stabilized silk).
