I owe Sire an apology! Just fooling around before going to my lesson, I realized I was adjusting my midrange backwards! I needed to that top mid range pot more than the bottom of that stack!:smug: Now my slap tone has come to life. I will still save for MetrolineExpress because I prefer the Sadowsky neck and base tone by a wide margin, but the V7 does deliver the goods, once you learn how to work it!:D:bassist::bassist::D

Makes sense about finding a good slap tone - so you're bumping high mids, leaving low mids somewhat scooped? I'm guessing? Given that I don't slap, I don't really "grok" good slap tone, just guessing from what I've read. I like bumping low mids a bit on mine, but that's for fingerstyle and occasional pick...

That's awesome Dr. Cheese! Yes, they're capable of some awesome slap tones and once you find the setting and how to adjust the mid knobs, you're set. I miss having a Sire having traded both my M3 and V3 but it's all part of my grand plan for this year. Sire are great basses for the money and versatile things but really want a version 2 so decided to trade and sell the version 1s I have for now. I plan on getting a G&L L2000 first, then hopefully run into a used Sire by then. :)

Actually I like the lower mids strong with boosted bass and treble. Literally scooped basses sound weak to me.

Sounds like a good plan to me!

I remember having many "Aha" moments with my Sire. Like you, it took me a while to figure how to dial in the tone with the Mid knobs, but then zeroed in even further by fiddling with the overall tone knob underneath the volume and the blend knob, I think my default setting was a little bit more on the neck pickup. A lot of adjustments possible on these basses. Love them.

I'm afraid to try the version 2s, 'cause I know I'll just want more! ;)
I should have been happy with my version 1 and was really at odds about selling it- it's really a great bass, but all the insidious posts and reviews on the version 2 was too hard for me to avoid. The rolled fretboard was the kicker for me, sent me over the edge...lol. What also made the decision easier was the glut of some pretty nice used basses selling in my community these days, carpe diem for now.

As they say the grass in the other side. The truth is that it is greener sometimes because some dog pooped on it!

Mid scoop is easy to get - you don't need eq. Use a J bass, turn on both pickups. There is a mid scoop when you do that. Yes, it's different for each string, but that's part of that sound as well.

This is why 2x j pickup configuration has been irreplaceable for me since.. forever. That's just the sound I want. Since I always run both pickups full open, I have setup the pickup height to only be functional when both pickups are full on - this means that the neck pickups pick a waaaay stronger signal than the bridge pickup, so even though there's some scoop, the neck pickup tone still comes through BUT the tone is still scooped enough in the 'pillowy' mids that it sounds huge!
