Sound Absorbing Acoustic Paint Experiences

@JeezyMcNuggles, how exactly does paint "trap" or dampen anything?
And somehow the magic number is 4 coats????

I couldn't find the absorption coefficient of the paint, plenty of acoustic panels specifically use that as a standard.

Coefficients for sound control also include STC (Sound Transmission Class), NRC (Noise Reduction Coefficient)- look for NRC.

Those are the same acronyms as what were used when I was in college, starting in 1975 and they're used in all of the technical literature for acoustical products. I still have the building materials book I bought for school and that uses them, too. Yeah, I still have it- it cost more than $80, in 1975! Using an inflation calculator, that comes to more than $400, but it would probably be available on a DVD-ROM, now.

I used this stuff [Invalid or Expired Link Removed] as a thermal insulator on my west-facing external wall. 3 coats of normal exterior latex mixed with this powder, applied to Hardie board, with a roller. It helped to cut down on the heat inside the house I had in Texas.

Just to see how much it might help with acoustics in my little 8 x 11 studio, I rollered on 2 coats. The change was noticeable, but only in the very high frequencies.

As stated before, paint will not do the job of panels. However, it looks cool.....
