Double Bass sound post setup

My teacher, also a Luthier, adjusted the sound post on my bass after my lesson tonight.

My cheapie rental plywood went from a nasial (sp) sound to sounding like a bass on the D & G strings. Total change in character.

He relayed a story:

A women came into his shop and she told him, she would buy a new sound post for her child's bass, but he must teach her how to set it, and she only had 15 minutes.
She left the shop frustrated.

It may take a life time to learn how to do it properly and I don't have many opertuinities (sp) left to screw up. I'll leave it to the experts.
