Sound Sample Game

Ok, I wanna play a little sound sample game. I recorded two Jazz basses. The first clips are flat and the second clips are both boosted to the same spot. Bass at about 80% and Treble at about 50%. If you take the time to listen to these fill out a few questions. Both basses are Jazz basses. They both have alder bodies, maple necks and rosewood fingerboards. However one bass has humbuckers and one has hum canceling pickups.

1. Which sounds more like single coils?
2. Which flat sounds better?
3. Which boost sounds better?

I like Bass 2 flat and also think single coil but what do I know.

Can you elaborate on that?

1) Bass 1 for single coils
2) Bass 1 for best flat sound
3) Bass 2 for boosted bass
4) Bass 2 boosted has the most aggressive sound

Can you elaborate on that?

The only way I can describe it is the sound of speakers with a high excursion pushing a lot of air with the note compared to the same notes being played through speakers not pushed quite so hard.

You've got the bass 2 MP3's backwards.

Anyway, my first instinct is to say bass 1 is single coils. I also think it responded to the boost a little more than bass 2, so I'd give it the edge there. And I think I liked the flat sound of bass 1 just a tiny bit better. It sounded a little more natural whereas bass 2 sounded a little overly bright.

Regardless, I would take either one of those basses. You could make either bass sound like the other if you wanted. The differences weren't so drastic that it made my jaw drop or anything.

2. They both sound alright flat; I still slightly favor 2

I'm not sure which one is which but think bass 1 sounds best either flat or boosted.

I agree that bass 2 lacks definition in the lower register. Too broad sounding without enough focus.

4. I thought the most radically different sound was bass1 boosted. It suddenly sounded more modern to me.
