Soundcraft UI12/16 help

I now have a Ui16. I was imagining I'd run over cable, but I have so many abandoned routers from ISPs, assuming I can find the right power supplies, that I'd be absolutely sorted for an external dual-band router provided I can reset it to default so I can get to the settings page again .

However, after getting the Ui16 I realise I could have got something like another second-hand Tascam US-2000 (16 inputs and the ability to spin in tracks from the host machine, cost £75) and one of the latest Raspberry Pis and could just connect to that. QPCPlus for lighting I can run with a USB to DMX dongle and a remote browser, and I could SSH in from a laptop at the mixing station and then bootstrap Reaper remotely which would open up more effects than on the Ui16. Much more complex, though, especially if something went wrong. I might try it some day.

Def more complex. If it works, great... but can one debug and resolve an issue quickly when something goes awry? What if your lights die mid song or there’s oceans of reverb all of a sudden.
In my experience, when it comes to things of this nature, there’s a great deal to be said for following the K.I.S.S. principle.

Yes. The other backup is snake + 1832FX mixer which is also KISS. But I might try a Pi at some point for fun/extra features/don't like the Ui16 long term, etc.

One issue I ran into was using Aux3&4 for separate (mono-) monitor mixes. If I set the Aux3&4 to be mono/independent in the settings menu, I can create a monitor mix for aux4 on my ipad, but there is no sound coming out of the HF jack of the ui12. So, effectively I have only three monitor signals, not four - Aux 1&2 via the XLR outs, and Aux 3 via the HF out. I tried plugging in different cables in all possible configurations (even plugging halfway in, like you would with insert jacks on your mixer channel for direct recording), but no results.

I contacted the retailer with whom I purchased the unit (Thomann) and they even sent me a new ui12 (they couldn't explain what was wrong either), but the new unit has the same issue: either Aux3&4 is set as a stereo-signal (present in both HF1 & HF2), or Aux3 is a mono-signal (present in HF1), and no sound for Aux4.

I'd love to know if anyone managed to run Aux3 and 4 as separate/independent monitor mixes on the ui12.

Old post, but I'll leave the solution for posterity...

Headphone 1 & 2 are connected in stereo. Headphone 1 is the LEFT channel and Headphone 2 is the RIGHT channel. They are physically connected like this, so the software cannot change anything about it. When you change to use Headphones as AUX, AUX 3 will be LEFT channel and AUX 4 will be RIGHT channel.

I created a male stereo TRS to male XLR. I connected the TIP from TRS to PIN 2 of XLR and the GROUND from TRS to PINS 1 & 3 of XLR (leaving out the RING connector from TRS).

I created a second male stereo TRS to male XLR. I connected the RING from TRS to PIN 2 of XLR and the GROUND from TRS to PINS 1 & 3 of XLR (leaving out the TIP connector from TRS).

Using 1st cable in AUX3 and 2nd cable in AUX4 now renders independent mixes since cable connected to AUX 3 is outputting only left channel and cable connected to AUX4 is outputting right channel only.

P.S. I would think that the same thing happens to AUX 5 & AUX 6 in the UI16.

Heads up! The only thing I've been missing with my Soundcrafts (4 of them) is that the headphone out is on the stagebox. I miss soloing things to phones. Solution- During soundchecks I have my in-ear monitors fed from the headphone out. I tend to just leave one in, or put one in as needed. Doesn't even chew up batteries, cause I only turn on the receiver when I need it. Trying to find a funky sounding cable, or a rattly drum is easier with solo than muting one channel at a time.

Does it matter that the headphone out is L or R, as indicated in the post above, or do you run mono?

Have a set of 'high gain' antennas arriving today. Hoping to test over the weekend and see what (if any) improvement there is using the internal hot spot. I still use an Archer C9 external mostly but lately I've had success inside on the internal with the us-24r very close by.

On the topic of adding more effects... I made a female XLR to 1/4 TS to tun from am Aux Out to a Soirce Audio Nemesis. the Nemesis will live on my pedal board and it gives me some serious delay options with foot controllable tap tempo and on off... I just assign what ever gets the delay to the aux and take the Nemesis out back to one of the xlr/combo jacks s my efx return. Very old school... Works great!

I can see myself looking at some top shelf midi controllable reverb and delay box(es) soon...
