I have had the same debate with a guitarist I have played with. I found out that even with 'down' tuning, the composer generally doesn't adjust chord names. i.e. even though the actual chord is a B, in half step they will still call it C.

I don't know if that helps, but that's why I find it frustrating at times to play in rock groups.

We're going for the musical tribute more than the stage antics.
I stopped by the guitar players house for a cd with 17 songs on it to learn.
I have also talked to a few others and they suggested playing in drop D tuning.
If things start working, I'll buy a cheap Fender Jazz bass for this band. It will be a 'work' bass.

The guitar player says the singer just might be able to pull it off. I'll wait to hear it myself.

Soundgarden isn't my first choice for a band, but this will be with a couple of former bandmates from a few different bands and it will help pay some bills as well as a chance to be obnoxious.:smug:

I wouldn't go as far as to call the OP uninterested. He posted for the advice of the community. This is what the forums are for. So, in theory your advice counts, but the two adjectives used to describe the OP are quite exaggerated.

Oh, that's right, I need to play with the bass at my knees to make it an offocial tribute band.

Do I need to take the same drugs that the band were taking at the time that they recorded the music to make my performance more authentic?

Lots of us have had jobs that we wouldn't put at the top of our 'dream job' list, but we showed up to do them.

Or can only true, dyed in the wool, hardcore fanboi types be in tribute bands?

Nowhere did I say that I am UNINTERESTED.
This is a band that will involve two of my good friends, so thinking that I would be noncommittal is laughable.
I don't let friends down, especially when it comes to being in a band.

FACT: Tribute bands (the GOOD ones) are comprised of hardcore fans of the band whose songs they have collectively decided to perform live for the enjoyment of others AND themselves.

I'm not sure why you would want to perform songs written by a band that you don't even enjoy listening to- even if it does involve some of your friends.

I can understand why some Soundgarden fans would take offense to your attitude towards the situation.

I think 4001 will do ok, there's no rule that says someone less than a rabid fan is not able to learn and reproduce Soundgarden. Maybe in a couple of years he will be a rabid fan, who knows? Hard act to replicate though - all instruments and vox esp. have to shine or it will sound half-assed

I NEVER said that I don't enjoy listening to their music.
I love a lot of their stuff.

Just because they aren't #1 on my wish list for tribute bands dosent mean that I don't want to play it and wouldn't enjoy it.

What I do with my time is my business. All I wanted from this thread was info on the bass player and his gear and what songs would be good to play.

I think you all get a bit too bent out of shape sometimes here.

I am as big of a fan of Soundgarden as I am of a lot of other bands.
I cant wait to get together and start playing this stuff.

After playing for so long I have a pretty good sense as to how to get the sound and playing attitude necessary to make my bass parts sound as close to Ben's as possible.

I've spent pretty much of all my playing years hearing, listening to and learning songs EXACTLY as they are played (or as close to them as humanly possible) and the same sound too.

I can understand that some hardcore Soundgarden fans would take offense to my not being a living, breathing, sleeping, eating Soundgarden fan but if I didn't like the band I wouldn't do the gig.

Even though tribute bands aren't the same as your basic weekend cover band, I cant imagine that all the members of every cover band is a hardcore fan of music like "Jessie's Girl".

If I had to do that all the time, yeah, I'd puke.
