Soundproofing

I'm moving into an apartment and I've gotten permission to soundproof it right? But I'm not exactly sure how to go about doing it. I know that sound is the air moving and that it moves in waves. I have an idea but I'm not sure if it will work. I was going to line my walls with matresses (kinda unsitely but I don't care) to absorb some of the vibrations. Then I am going to take poster board and staple it up but I'm going to push the two ends together so that poster board is sticking out. I'm hoping this uneven surface with reflect some of the sound waves. Any insight on this will help me out a lot.
