Source Audio Bass Envelope Filter PRO (pics and clips)

So the BEFpro can be used with an expression pedal to control the filter sweep, and you can control the cutoff (lowest) frequency like you can with the moog mf-101. Can you get it low enough so barely any sound is coming out- almost inaudible?

Also I think the ability to set the highest frequency cutoff could also be beneficial, so there is a defined frequency band that the filter sweeps through with highest and lowest values set instead of only the lowest frequency. Just a thought…

The other SA guys may correct me if I'm wrong on this, but my answer to your question is there isn't a direct assignment for the expression pedal that controls the cutoff frequency, but you can control the modulation or frequency with the expression pedal. With certain filter types, you would be essentially controlling that cutoff.

Also, you have the Graphic EQ to adjust the amplitude of each frequency.

I've found that I can achieve a really gnarly sub-bass sound using this trick by cutting off all the highs and locating the sweet spot with the expression pedal.

There are direct assignments of expression to frequency, as well as Range, Speed, Mix, Filter Voice (selector), and more. You can see the various expression controls on the sticker near the footswitches.

And you can in fact control both the start and stop range of the expression right on the BEF Pro. The Frequency knob controls the center (start) frequency, the Backpage XD parameter controls the direction and upper limit of the expression travel. Just to clarify, you can have the expression apply negative or positive modulation.

In the current firmware you can apply whole note to sixteenth note beat divisions against MIDI Clock only. While you can tap tempo the expression against rate in tap tempo mode is free-form, not locked divisions.

Note that in tap tempo mode, and this goes for ANY tap tempo enabled product, you can effectively control beat divisions via your tapping. Typically the LFO waveform completes one cycle between each tap. If you want it to cycle across a whole measure, only tap the 1 of each measure instead of the 1-2 which would cycle quarter notes. That's not as instant a transition as bopping immediately between divisions, but I'm just noting it's physically possible as I'm sure some users may not have considered that.

i think he's talking more about having it set to a fixed tempo (tapped or MIDI synced), then using an expression pedal to play with the multiplier from that tempo live.

i do that with my IE Cygnet and you can get some funky, almost IDM stutters with enough practice.

good times.

Someone asked about MF-101 comparison. This is not a MF-101 emulator, nor have I seen anywhere that any user or Source Audio rep has said that it is.

In fact, the filter voices do not dial audibly deep enough, nor audibly steep enough, to totally cut all the highs out of your signal. Even with 4 pole filter voices. There's always quite a bit of mids and highs bleeding through. However, you can leverage the EQ and Volume controls to further cut the output if you're seeking some sort of pure sub-bass type static filter.

With that said, I think the filtering and feature set that is provided should likely work well for a lot of users that would normally try to pick up a MF-101. You have to take into account the entire package of pros-and-cons of both setups. With the BEF Pro you get a smaller pedal, lots of voices and functionality, beat sync LFO, presets, etc. all in one inexpensive box. To match that with MOOG products you need both the MF-101 and the MP-201 which will cost 3x as much and take up more pedalboard real estate. I haven't used the MOOG combo, but I've done a fair amount of research, and I'm sure it can do some things the BEF Pro cannot. But even then I'm sure the BEF Pro can do things the MOOG cannot, namely a variety of filter voices, better bypass, and I believe better envelope-based performance and options.

I don't profess to be a master of beat synced filtering. I would be interested to hear someone with serious skill and that already owns the MOOG combo spend some time with the BEF Pro to provide some direct comparisons and opinions.

Anyone have any comments on the "vocal" patches I created? I was just re-listening to some of the clips I created and those popped out at me as sounding pretty unique. I think the KORG G5 synth has some pretty good vocal filters, and the SugarBytes WOW software VST has some great vocal filters. But I haven't personally come across any pedals that do reasonably good formant sounding vocal filtering on bass guitar.

I just ordered the standard version Saturday along with the Multiwave Pro :scowl: I wish I had known there was a pro version coming out. Still, I can't wait to play with what I've got coming!

Nice! They work so amazingly well together. I've been trying to come up with a word that sums up their sound the best. So far my candidates are:

Sklooorp
Slurple Gurp
Schwaoonk

I just got a hold of the shipper, and they've canceled my BEF for now, should be able to get one of the first BEF Pros mid-July! So, until then, I'll be able to play around with the Multiwave Pro. Hopefully it arrives by the weekend so I can test it out on Boogie On Reggae Woman!

Gentlemen,

All of the demos, clips, etc. for the BEF Pro have been in production and I thought I'd give you all a preview of what we're cooking up.

It's designed to showcase all the different sound possibilities of the BEF Pro. The link should take you to a blog that breaks down how each portion was done, such as the dubstep bridge.

If you guys like the tune, it's downloadable from the Soundcloud player!
