The Reflex won't power these boxes, whereas a Singular Sound Beat Buddy and a Boss SY-300 are two things in my setup that will. If I put my Beat Buddy upstream of the Reflex, then into the Quadras, it still doesn't work, so it is apparently not an issue of supply its own power vs. passing power along from another upstream device.

You can blame me for that---I pushed them to do Merge during beta testing. They discussed having a switchable option in the editor...
Ditto. If you have a single MIDI chain (me) you always want merge/thru otherwise you break the damn MIDI chain which is horribly annoying and requires MIDI splitter doodads. Which is why I own a MIDI Solutions Thru though I haven't used it in forever since all of my current gear thankfully provides merge/thru. Apparently if I had stuck the MIDI Solutions Thru after the Reflex it wouldn't have worked due to lack of MIDI power.
You learn (or re-learn) something every day.

I was having a real pickle of a time before Source Audio whipped up some magic and put merge into the Reflex. And then Singular Sound did the same thing with my Beat Buddy, so I now longer need a Merge. I still use a Thru for convenience, but in principle I could simply do a single chain if I had to.
Breaking the MIDI chain is one thing, but it's even worse when you need those merge-type capabilities...for example with the Reflex, I need it because I needed/wanted MIDI clock and PC sent to the Reflex, but I wanted to add the Reflex's MIDI expression to downstream pedals that needed clock and PC. Even with the MIDI Solutions boxes, there was really no easy way to do this, because you risk looping things back on itself.

Are you talking about the Hub channel or the individual MIDI channels for the SB2 pedals? Which are technically assignable on a per-scene basis?

To be honest I'm not sure how it works. I have a unique problem with my Hub that the Sorcerer's, for all their wizardry, haven't been able to figure out. It constantly jumps back to Scene 1 when it is in my setup and connected to my Beat Buddy. They couldn't replicate the issue with a different Beat Buddy. To get around this, I have Scene 1 set up as a "null" scene, so that jumping back to Scene 1 doesn't change anything.
The relevance to your issue is that I only use the Hub Manager to create and save scenes, it is impractical for me to do it the way Source Audio actually envisioned it. So I'm not sure what the answer is to your question. I do think my pedals tend to respond to the MIDI commands on the channels I intend for them, though...not sure if I have to have a scene loaded for that to be the case.
I have a Midi Designer page for each pedal and that works fine as long as the channel is 1, but not with other channels. I guess a scene needs to be loaded. I'll try that later.
