Speaker cab covering

I currently use an Ashdown 8x10, which has a vinyl/plastic covering. It's getting a bit of a battering from constantly being shifted about and is getting a bit ugly.

I knnow it's not the end of the world, but I recently did a gig using the house 8x10, which had been stripped and covered with that shhet metal, firestep stuff, with the criss cross diamond pattern ( sorry, I don't know it's exact name ).

This seems a great idea, but I was worried it would have a detrimental affect on the tone. Is this the case? I couldn't really tell from the gig as it was an Ampeg and the onstage sound was awful.

It shouldnt effect the tone at all.

Maybe the ampeg wasnt your thing, personally it is a league above the ashdowns (But i really dont like ashdown gear too much).

The problem with covering the amp with diamond plate is that it would add quite a bit of weight to the cab, and it wouldnt be cheap.

The marshall 810 ive got has a few pretty well designed parts.

The back corners are protected by strips of diamond plate. And it has skid rails. It also has a diamond plate kick plate for tilting it back. This stops the cab getting damanged during load in and load out.

I didn't mean to knock Ampeg, I just meant I was used to Ashdown.
As for the cost, I have a mate who is a welder by trade and he said it would be a simple job.
If it wouldn't affect the tone I think it needs to be done!

Oh since we are on the topic of cab covering, i just got a peavey mark 4, and as you can guess, the tolex is dirty as crap, if i just spray painted black to cover the dirt would that be fine? or would it peel off?

Paint is not going to affect its durability - except maybe in a negative way. If the Tolex is worn and deteriorated, best move would be to get it recovered - with the material of your choice. Spray-on bedliner, if you can swing it. Carpet would retain odors and pet hair, but at least it would be more durable... :hmm:

ehh its not worn out or ripped, just dirty, and i cant seem to get rid of that dirt. i used a toothbrush 10 minutes ago. ill wait for that to dry up, if it works great, if not, i think ill try a big bristle brush.

Hey "Kennethfaria" try using Krud Kutter that you can find at Home Depot - Lowes type places and then follow up with a good coating of Armor-All, letting it soak in good before wiping down. Word of caution on Krud Kutter. Avoid overspray and particularly wiping hard on metal logos etc.. It will dissolve some printing on those type things. It may take a second soaking with the Armor-All, but will eventually look like new.:D

i personally have skinned out two ampeg 810's in the past 3 years with diamond tread alluminum ... it has no effect on the sound , however does on the weight of the cab ... in my op it also extremely hard to keep looking good when you bash it in and out of a trailer all the time and in and out of clubs .... the next one i do will be covered in lava swirl looking smooth alluminum ...... my 2 cents

it's called diamond plate, comes in 1/8 in., 1/4 in. 3/8 in. etc. pricey?

a former bandmate once covered our raw p a speaks with black paint with a little left-over asphalt sealer (rubberised?) and applied it with a thick (k)napp paint roller.
he left the speaks out to dry in the summer sun for a couple days and man those eastern acoustic p a speaks turned out better than new. durable in the band truck.
